Well, this is both more and less ambiguous than the shortened circulating paraphrase that goes something like “Al-Qaeda formed because of Gitmo”.

well, Bush started housing terror detainees there after the war started against Afghanistan in 2001 and we needed someplace to send the POW’s
Actually, just to set the record straight, Bush opened Gitmo in 2006 for the detention of terrorits. Al Qaeda was formed sometime between 1988 and 1990.
If someone has better dates, I will glady stand corrected.
