BIG NEWS....
The Democrats had assured themselves this was a safe seat, even in spite of recent polling...

And ya just gotta love the “spend more time with his family...” line.

Yes. North Dakota.

Will they elect a Republican?

This is big news. I didn’t think the GOP had any real hopes of retaking the Senate - the numbers just weren’t there. But, this helps.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/74425-dorgan-announces-retirement

His statement:

“Although I still have a passion for public service and enjoy my work in the Senate, I have other interests and I have other things I would like to pursue outside of public life. I have written two books and have an invitation from a publisher to write two more books. I would like to do some teaching and would also like to work on energy policy in the private sector.

“So, over this holiday season, I have come to the conclusion, with the support of my family, that I will not be seeking another term in the U.S. Senate in 2010. It is a hard decision to make after thirty years in the Congress, but I believe it is the right time for me to pursue these other interests.

“Let me be clear that this decision does not relate to any dissatisfaction that I have about serving in the Senate. Yes, I wish there was less rancor and more bipartisanship in the U.S. Senate these days. But still, it is a great privilege to serve and I have the utmost respect for all of the men and women with whom I serve.

Will they elect a Republican?

Probably. There are no real second string Dems on the bench. Nearly all statewide offices are held by Republicans.

At this rate the Dems are looking at losing 5-6 seats, maybe more. If that happens we return to gridlock. The Repubs could easily pick up 50 plus seats in the House though. Those Blue Mutts that went liberal are not going to be able to hold their seats come November.

I hope & pray this means the RATs are jumping ship and distancing themselves from 0bozo the commie pig. However it also means that Dorgan will vote for the healthcare atrocity, come what may. I hope the GOP will capitalize on another vacant demoRAT Senate seat, and I would love to see the demoRATs frog-marched off to federal prison for high crimes & treason committed against the U.S.

I would guess being elected to the Congress is as good a way as any of making sure of not having to spend a whole lot of time in North Dakota.
