The New York Times pushed up the publication of a Sunday Magazine article from January 17 to today (online) that leads with a dramatic telling of the incoming and outgoing administrations of Barack Obama and George W. Bush dealing with a reported threat that Somali terrorists would try to attack Obama's inauguration on January 20, 2009.
The Times told Politico:
(that) following the botched Christmas Day terrorist plot, Deputy Magazine Editor Megan Liberman said that the urgency set in" to publish sooner.
We just thought we should push the Web-first mantra as much as we could, Liberman said.
While the Times report reads like they are breaking the story, the threat was widely reported on January 20, 2009 by such widely read media outlets as the AFP:
US intelligence services chased reports of a potential terrorist threat Tuesday as President Barack Obama was sworn in before massive crowds amid an unprecedented security lockdown.
Officials were tightlipped about the seriousness of the terrorist threat, with the Department of Homeland Security saying the information was "of limited specificity and uncertain credibility."
But a Homeland Security official, who asked not to be identified, said it was linked to a militant Somali group called al-Shabab.
"The FBI has acknowledged publicly that there has been a lot of incoming information, all of which we are running to ground. This is the only specific bulletin that has gone out," the official said.
With an estimated two million or more people jammed into the heart of Washington to celebrate the inauguration of the first African American president, security officials braced for a potential security nightmare.
The next day, the Los Angeles Times reported on the terrorist scare:
The swearing-in of Barack Obama came off without a security-related hitch Tuesday, but underneath the calm veneer, federal authorities were intensively investigating a report that a group of Somalia-based militants wanted to launch some kind of inauguration-related attack.
The media is slavishly echoing the NY Times report tonight as if this is new news.
The AP, slavishly following the NY Times in regurgitating this old news story, has transmitted a news article headlined, "US Feared Terror Threat at Obama's Inauguration" (or with variations thereof) that has been picked up by dozens of news outlets including CBS News, Fox News and the Baltimore Sun.
Even the AFP has forgotten they had the story last year and have run a new article based on the NY Times article.
The Times said "the urgency set in" after the Christmas Day attack. It sure did. They had to bail Obama out of a jam he created for himself. What better way to do that than to play the sympathy card knowing the dupes in the mainstream media will blindly follow your lead.
YEP....only, I think they are aiming at the dumber set...i.e. Obomba voters!
So...apparently, the Bush administration was better at preventing terror, since they knew in advance and put together a plan of action to prevent it. In the new administration, we rely on faulty bombs equipment and brave Dutchmen.
LOL-Busted! Great work!
To borrow a phrase, this is a teachable moment. It shows how the media gins up stories at convenient times to help a leading liberal who’s in trouble. In this case it’s Obama. And he’s getting a lot of help with this one.
Chavez,Castro & the Taliban are already p.o.’d at him including those others that have yet to be named.
let’s just say this ain’t pretty
It’s hard to argue with the post-2001 Bush record on preventing terror attacks on American soil. But Obama’s been ungrateful ever since he was safely sworn in.
Thanks.
ABC local news in Chicago included this story in this evening’s broadcast. It’s spreading.....
They spread it fast and thick, don’t they? Thanks for the local report.
Of course, that wasn't his purpose for telling the story, but it was my take out of it.

I won’t be surprised at all if within the next week or two the FBI is “encouraged” to prematurely and impetuously take down a suspected terror cell it has under surveillance so the Administration can crow about it’s good deeds on the domestic security front.
And in doing so completely ruins any chance of connecting the dots to the cell’s parents and funding source.

They’re trying to sell another load of shi’ite..
I’ve seen that image on south park also & I still don’t know what the reference is
This news story was headlined at the top of the hour radio news again and again and again all night long.
It's either obvious manipulation by the MSM ---- or, they are much dumber than we think they are, and they were so overwhelmed with The.Prez a year that this bit of terror news absolutely escaped them.
It must be embarressing to be a journalist nowadays -- journalist seems to be a synonym for 'ignorant incompetent.'
I hope that the press gets publically admonished for this nonsense.
No terrorist would attack Obama. He is their leader.
