~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island

The Naval Station Newport (NAVSTA Newport) is a United States Navy base located in the towns of Newport and Middletown, Rhode Island. NS Newport is home to the Naval War College. It once was the homeport for Cruiser Destroyer Force Atlantic, and now maintains inactive ships at its pier facilities, along with the United States Coast Guard.

In BRAC 2005 (Base Realignment and Closure), NAVSTA Newport gained over five hundred billets, in addition to receiving, again, Officer Candidate School (OCS), and the Naval Supply Corps School, and several other activities.

Iron steamships first fought one another during the Civil War, during which both Confederate and Union navies also used submarines and steamships. As these new ships and weapons battered one another, a number of important men in uniform saw how naval warfare would evolve. Among those was Adm. Dixon Porter, who realized that in the future of ships would slip beneath the sea to perform silent services, or be covered in metal and fight with huge cannons.

It was under Porter's efforts that the Navy established torpedoes, mines and other explosives as part of naval warfare's "emerging technology." In accordance with his vision, the Navy created the Torpedo Station on Goat Island in 1869, which has since become the Newport Naval Complex, home of the Navy Education and Training Center. This is the only active military base in Rhode Island.

At this time, no postgraduate schools were available to junior officers, and enlisted personnel received their training aboard ship. Commodore Stephen Bleecker Luce is credited with establishing the Navy's first Recruit Training Station and with the founding of the Naval War College. Luce's colorful career covered four tours with the Naval Academy--including its Civil War years at Newport--and he had long expounded the need for better training programs.

During the naval decline of the 1870s, Luce established and built up the Naval Apprentice Training System, which trained staff for both the Navy and merchant marine. Luce is better known though for his major achievement, the founding of the Naval War College at Newport in 1884.

Learn More About The History Of Naval Station Newport HERE!

Newport is the Navy’s premier site for training officers, officer candidates, senior enlisted personnel and midshipman candidates, as well as conducting advanced undersea warfare and development systems. Naval Station Newport’s mission is to fulfill the diverse requirements of its tenant commands by providing the facilities and infrastructure that are essential to their optimum performance.

Newport is the home of the Navy’s most prestigious educational institution, the Naval War College. As the oldest such institution in continuous existence any-where in the world, the college is organized to pursue and integrate both academic and research endeavors. Each year, over 500 outstanding mid-career level officers of the Navy, all other U.S. services, civilian federal agencies and inter-national naval officers come here to pursue a rigorous 10-month course of post-graduate studies.

Currently, the station is also the home of the USS Forrestal and the Saratoga, both of which are decommissioned. The Forrestal is set to be sunk as an artificial reef at a later date; the fate of the Saratoga has not yet been decided, although there is a movement which wishes to make the ship into a museum ship in nearby North Kingstown.

Patriots Memorial is located in front of McCarty-Little Hall at the Naval War College, Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. The memorial is dedicated to the three students and ten alumni of the Naval War College who perished in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on The Pentagon. The Naval War College Foundation raised money for the memorial through private donations. It was dedicated in 2002 and contained a piece of limestone removed from the damaged portion of The Pentagon.

Cold here - we're in the lower 20's with a brisk wind - no improvement expected through the weekend. We have the blast heat on so it's warm in the house. Also replaced all the windows last year - house was like a wind tunnel before - now calm air. :)

Good evening Luvie! *hugs*

Evenings are always busy. Got home late & phone time.

Sonboy had some soup....he’s under the weather.

It’s kind of a fend for yourself night so it seems.

Not sure what I wnat to fend for myself yet but it’s getting late.

Maybe Luvie has some cheese toast for me....:)

We need to get together for a feast, eh?

As much as I love legumes...I think I need a break!:)

I think I'll take the leftovers to my FIL.

All I seem to want is goat cheese & crackers with fresh fruit. It's a craving!:)

THE SOLDIER’S CODE

Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower addresses troops of the 101st Airborne Division 5JUN1944 prior to D-Day Normandy

The Soldier’s Code

1) I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.

2) I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender my men while they still have the means to resist.

3) If I am captured, I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

4) If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me, and will back them up in every way.

5) When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am bound to give only name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies, or harmful to their cause.

6) I will never forget that I am an American fighting man, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, August, 1955.

Aloha Doc!

While my former agency butted heads with the CIA from time to time, there comes a time to recognize their efforts and sacrifice. Now is one of those times.

Eight stars for the unknown agents lost in Afghanistan should be added to our Patriots List.
