Romney will hit key primary states on book tour
Boston Globe ^ | January 3, 2010 | Sasha Issenberg

Posted on 01/03/2010 9:48:14 PM PST by ellery

WASHINGTON - Later this winter, Mitt Romney will strike out on a national book tour, but unlike his party’s most successful recent author he does not expect to make headlines with bits of fresh gossip from the 2008 campaign, see his fans camp overnight outside bookstores, or chat with Oprah Winfrey about his family.

“Inevitably there are going to be comparisons with the Sarah Palin book,’’ said Eric Fehrnstrom, a Romney spokesman. “We’re not going to match her crowd size or sales. These are two different people with different ways of expressing themselves.’’

-snip-

But Romney, considered by many in the party to be the default Republican front-runner for the 2012 nomination, is approaching the book tour with the patient, workmanlike mien that has distinguished him from other probable contenders who seem far more eager for attention.

-snip-

At the same time, Romney is largely stepping away from Washington’s daily partisan political fights and ideological clashes within the right. He has expressed little interest in getting involved in competitive primaries, many of which have become contentious clashes over the GOP’s direction. Romney is unlikely to pick a side in Senate primaries in Florida or California, or for governor of Texas, according to his spokesman.

“Generally speaking, we shy away from primaries unless there’s a compelling reason to get involved,’’ said Fehrnstrom. “One of the criteria we use to determine if we should get involved in the primary is whether a particular candidate has been helpful to Mitt - because we’re loyal and return favors.’’

A Romney-friendly Boston Globe article.

I found the last few paragraphs very interesting. Romney apparently doesn't care to get involved in primary campaigns to win back Congress for conservatives (or even republicans). His spokesperson all but admits that he'll mostly only do it to help himself and engage in political back-scratching.

If he’s the perceived frontrunner, I’ll take McCain back.

“Romney will hit key primary states on book tour”

WOW! Isn’t that a coincidence. ;)

Liberals at a liberal Boston paper working to help us pick their pick for the Republican ticket.

Thanks, but No Thanks!

Yep, that’s how it struck me. The article is full of passages complimentary to Romney, contrasted with snarky asides about Palin.

IMO, the article accurately paints Romney as the political whore he is. ... but doesn’t realize it.

Yes, a “compelling reason to get involved” in a primary race seems to be about usefulness to Romney and not about pushing the strongest group of conservative candidates into office.

I like the title of his book but I’ll look to others such as Sarah Palin to actually carry and defend that message (”No Apology: The Case for America’s Greatness”)

When he has only a handful of people show up unlike the huge crowd Palin had follow her, will he go away?

Romney, it will be unfair of you to pay people to show up at book sites to make you seem relevant.

Give it a rest, Mitt. Look at Sarah’s numbers. Look at how people love (and hate) her. Could you inspire that much emotion, that much conversation? Nope. Take your Mr. Status Quo back home, or better yet, support the choice of the average American citizen:

Sarah Palin

Romney has a book? Who da thunk....
I’d rather read a recipe book in Sanskrit.
Strike that.
I’ll just have a beer instead.

yes indeed, it could not make it more obvious that the “book” and “book tour” are campaign moves..... not that it’s not true to some extent of any likely candidate who has a book tour, but to be so open and shameless about targeting primary states, well that simply makes it the early version of the 2012 campaign....

We’re not going to match her crowd size or sales.

At least they're honest about that, I guess.

Romney’s 200,000 first print.

Romney book?
LOL!

Might go over in a mild extent in Utah and Michigan.

I sure hope in the book he explains all aspects of Joe Smith and of his walk with MLK. With proof.

Meanwhile, I'm about to begin reading Sarah's book.

Wouldn't read Romney's book if you paid me.
