Bono, the rebel, is controlled by his record company and management. If I was a communist rebel, like the types he hangs around with (Billy Bragg), I’d endorse stealing from capitalist corporations. Now that Obama has the corporations in his pocket, he has Bono in his pocket too so that the old communists like Bragg are out of the loop. The old communists who wear T-shirts will never reap the profits like Bono reaps profits by being the front man for corporations, especially those who endorses Obama. I agree to some extent. Yes, people should be paid for the fruits of their labor. I remember the “god ole days” when you bought an album or a CD with only a few good songs and no one in the record industry was complaining.

It’s virtually impossible to control “mechanical reproduction” with today’s technology. The only way to make the “big money” and actually get paid is through “airplay royalties”. Radio has never really been in the “music business”. They’re in the “selling commercials” business. Even more so today with the total central and corporate control of “playlists and rotations”. That’s why there’s nothing but formulaic crap on the radio. Years ago, radio was at least marginally - on a local level - interested in the music. A person could get a local “jock” to help them “break a record”. At every level, including the outfits like ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, there’s a realization that collecting on “mechanical royalties” is nearly impossible so there’s very little interest in anything but “airplay” crap. The music business has flown up its own butthole.

Sounds like a pretty cogent description of the situation. The internet is huge and amorphous as hell. What’s good about it can also be whats bad about it.
I put some stuff up a while back. There was would be no real support of it (public performance) since the singer wasn’t interested. But I put the stuff up any way just to see what happened. However so many people grabbed the songs to put up on “radio stations” (which is a thing an unknown like me WANTS) that I could never get a read on what the songs were doing. Whan the radio stations kicked in the counts stopped, yet people are STILL grabbing the stuff for their “stations” now. Oh well....
Copyrighting was originally intended to protect artists, but has become a method to enrich lawyers and corporations. As an example, Hank Williams has been dead for nearly sixty years, but lawyers still make money off his music. What if a hammer manufacturer demanded a royalty off every nail driven with a hammer? That's what copyright has become.

But, did you build the "car" and have to pay others for producing and marketing the "Car"? The "car" in your scenario was not stolen, it was copied, or reproduced. There is still value in the reproduction; same cost and value as was put into the original.
Same with songs and software. They cost money to produce and to market. Why should they be allowed to be stolen? They are produced to be sold; not just given away, unless the manufacturer or artist decides to do so.
