The Watts Up With That website has a scary story about our melting polar ice caps. John Lockwood from Washington D.C. found an interesting article from the Washington Post. Here are some excerpts:
The Arctic seems to be warming up. Reports ... all point to a radical change in climatic conditions, and hitherto unheard of high temperatures in that part of the earth's surface.
Ice conditions were exceptional. In fact, so little ice has never before been noted. Dr. Hoel reports that he made a section of the Gulf Stream at 81 degrees north latitude and took soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters. These show the Gulf Stream very warm, and it could be traced as a surface current till beyond the 81st parallel.
Where formerly great masses of ice were found, there are now often moraines, accumulations of earth and stone. At many points where glaciers formerly extended far into the sea they have entirely disappeared.

The article was written in 1922. See the whole story here.
Ping of possible interest.
1922...cool

We need a modern view indicating trhe 81st parallel.
That is absolutely too funny.
In other news......It was 37 below zero in Minnesota this
morning, same as it was in 1922,1932,1942,1952,1962,1972,
1982,1992,2002, and will be in 2012. Did I mention it was
37 below in every year in between also?
Not surprising, given that the Earth is still warming after emerging from the last glacial epoch, and another warming trend that followed the end of the Little Ice Age in 1850.
Same as it ever was. Only in 1922 it was real, not political manipulation for one world government by Socialists.
The polar ice caps are vanishing and yet Obama is eating shaved ice like it’s going out of style!
But the great prophet AlGorian has foretold that such meltings will occur unless trillions of U.S. dollars are immediately extorted... er I mean redirected to his carbon credit companies and third world nations. A distinguished Nobel Peace Prize winner wouldn’t lie, would he?
Never got above 14 degrees here in southern Michigan today.
.
Good stuff.
Back then, so they say, science was pretty much on the up and up.
