Pantybomber exposes naked bureaucracy
The Orange County Register ^ | Mark Steyn

Posted on 01/01/2010 2:00:46 PM PST by ventanax5

On Christmas Day, a gentleman from Nigeria succeeded (effortlessly) in boarding a flight to Detroit with a bomb in his underwear. Pretty funny, huh?

But the Pantybomber wasn't the big joke. The real laugh was the United States government. The global hyperpower spent the next week making itself a laughingstock to the entire planet. First, the bureaucrats at the TSA swung into action with a whole new range of restrictions.

Against radical Yemen-trained Muslims wearing weaponized briefs? Of course not. That would be too obvious. So instead they imposed a slew of constraints against you. At Heathrow last week, they were permitting only one item of carry-on on U.S. flights. In Toronto, no large purses.

Um, the Pantybomber didn't have a purse. He brought the bomb on board under his private parts, and his private parts weren't part of his carry-on (although, if reports of injuries sustained in his failed mission are correct, they may well have been part of his carry-off). But no matter. If in doubt, blame the victim. The TSA announced that for the last hour of the flight no passenger can use the toilets or have anything on his lap – not a laptop, not a blanket, not a stewardess, not even a paperback book. I can't wait for the first lawsuit after an infidel flight attendant confiscates a litigious imam's Koran as they're coming into LAX.

And remember, this was a bombing mission that “failed.” With failures like this, who needs victories?

A rare Steyn where, although it is humorously written, he is clearly p!ssed!

The name Janet Incompetano is a perfect fit for the head of homeland security. She's almost as incompetent as the jackass who appointed her.

In light of this incident, I maintain that all underwear should be banned to protect the public.

When you outlaw underwear only outlaws will have underwear.

Our biggest problem is not a suicidal bomber. It is a suicidal government!

Liberals are the purveyors of death. Fascism, abortion, willful ignorance, and wimps. Despicable.

It is a suicidal government.

I think you mean homocidal governent; our over-lords have no desire to kill themselves, but haven't the slightest concern about placing US citizens in danger, either civilian or military.

“Panty Bomber” title has a better ring to it.

there’s ONE airline who does it right.

let’s see if 0bama adopts the 100% successful formula or if he tries to build something new based on hope and change.

never mind...we already know.

while 0ne is learning on the job, it’s expected that a few mistakes will occur (Bush’s fault, of course)

Stepping back from things and trying to put it all in focus, I see only ever increasing insanity legislated by a government ever increasingly isolated from their own legislation. That is one of the main reasons things will not get better any time soon.

They exempt themselves from their plan for "healthcare" that is anything but while bestowing upon themselves the ultimate healthcare for life. They pass tax laws that they don't follow. They make air travel a test of patience and sanity, refusing to profile likely suspects or even say "jihadist" or "terror" outloud, preferring instead to strip search grandma.

It will never happen, but every law Congress passes should apply to Congress to a greater measure than to the rest of us. They should be the guinea pigs for their insanity before subjecting the rest of us to it and should be personally liable for the consequences of poorly conceived legislation.
