New Research: Why Never Spanking Might Be Worse for Kids Than Spanking Them
Wednesday, December 30, 2009 11:00 AM By Po Bronson
In NurtureShock, we described some extensive cross-ethnic and international research on spanking by Drs. Jennifer Lansford and Ken Dodge.
Their data suggested that if a culture views spanking as the normal consequence for bad behavior, kids arent damaged by its occasional use.
To explain this shocker, the scholars suggested that in cultures or communities where spanking is common, parents are less agitated when administering spankings. Spanking almost never when combined with losing your temper can be worse than spanking frequently.*
But what about the third option: not spanking them at all?
Unfortunately, theres been little study of this, because children whove never been spanked arent easy to find. Most kids receive physical discipline at least once in their life. But times are changing, and parents today have numerous alternatives to spanking. The result is that kids are spanked less often overall, and kids whove never been spanked are becoming a bigger slice of the pie in long-term population studies.

I always thought that kids was the reason for the invention of Duct Tape.
Hmmm.... Newsweek?
I guess spanking was only bad when Bush was president...
“spanking punk lib senators and representatives does some good.”
It won’t do any good- they PAY for their spankings;)
I don’t know about spanking, but I see the logic in why Alligators eat their young.
My memory is that I never spanked my kids, but I did discipline them. They all turned out great. None of them ever gave me—or anyone else—any serious grief. To check my memory I asked my oldest son on Christmas day if he ever remembered being spanked. He laughed and said he never remembered being spanked, but he did remember being “thunked” a few times—my knuckle on his head—not enough to make him cry, but enough to get his clear attention. I had forgotten all about that. I guess I did resort to physical force in disciplining my kids.
My other two sis-in-laws disciplined their kids with the needed "attention getters" applied to the posterior, and they turned out mostly normal---pretty good kids.
Actually, the (biblically based) advice I’ve gotten was to spank them for any “first time” offense, because it is likely NOT the “first time”, just the first time you caught them.
I miss mine as well.
If you are angry when you use the rod of chastisement, you’re doing it wrong...
cool off, calmly explain why they are being punished, and then chastise as appropriate.
Spanking definitely worked on me. It taught me in no uncertain terms that there were boundaries I dared not cross, and if I did, pain would follow.
I hated it then, but as I look back now, I understand why my Parents spanked me. I believe it made me a better person.
“You better duck, you know you need it” was a joke around our house. I’d never hit them but I’d bring my hand up real quick next to them and they would wince, hence the phrase.
Like most leftists, Dr Spock considers himself to be smarter than God.
“you will be like God, knowing good and evil”
ie,
you can consider yourself to be God, deciding what is good and evil, right and wrong, for yourself.
Thanks. That was my first big laugh all day.
Ever heard
“silence is golden, but duct tape is silver”
?
Yep, I deserved every spank I got, and even once a punch in the face for insulting my old man. I *really* respected him after that.
My ex Brother in Law spared the rod, now he’s emptying his wallet on lawyers to keep his little darling from doing serious time for multiple, repeat offenses.
Still not allowing the kid to face the consequenses of his actions.
My dad had a board with a set of holes drilled in it....One whack was usually enough.
Exactly, as a father of six, one-size-fits-all does not work
In my house there were three rules that guaranteed a quick corrective, physical discipline
1. Lying
2. Hitting sibling out of anger
3. Temper tantrum (passive rebellion)
What is this?
