Why is Obama still in Hawaii? (Washington Post!)
Washington Post ^ | 12-29-09 | Jo-Ann Armao

Posted on 12/29/2009 3:38:00 PM PST by truthandlife

President Obama wants us all to know he’s taking seriously the attempted terrorist attack of Christmas Day and that his administration is doing all it can to ensure our safety. But his words would be a lot more convincing if not delivered during time snatched between rounds of golf, swimming and sunbathing.

The president of the United States is never really on vacation. The responsibilities of the nation's highest office can’t be shed and, as the world’s most powerful leader, Obama can surely summon whatever resources he needs no matter his location. Nonetheless, there’s something unsettling about the president not wanting to interrupt his plans to deal with what appears to be the most serious threat to the nation’s safety since 9/11.

Part of the issue is symbolic. Returning to Washington would have sent the world a powerful message of a president willing to drop everything and roll up his sleeves -- someone who really means business. It also would have set an example for the federal officials and workers charged with carrying out our national security policy. I can’t imagine Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano initially being so sanguine about the system working if her boss had hotfooted it back to the Oval Office to personally check up on things. Work situations vary, sure, but in my experience there’s always a lot less pressure when the boss is away.

By staying in Hawaii, the president has sent the message that the situation really isn’t all that serious, that things can proceed just fine until he’s back. And isn’t it that kind of reasoning that emboldens our never-vacationing enemies into thinking Christmas Day is the perfect time for them to strike?

Even his liberal media friends are trying to give this guy hints on how to be a POTUS.

Here is a clue for POTUS. A muilitary attack on the United States requires a military response, better sooner than later.

This process begins by asking the Pentagon to provide (in 24 hours) a set of responses (options) from which you as POTUS can choose.

Then, as Commander in Chief you direct the action of the military and let the Secretary of Defense run it.

We have our own Papa Doc in charge, race notwithstanding. It’s the imperialistic attitude that defines him as such.

WOW, that brings back memories of when I was very young and you used to buy a newspaper to get the news. It was great back then, people actually wrote about things that mattered to the country and they tried really hard to be fair. Didn’t always make it, but they tried really hard.

This may sound strange, but I don’t agree. The president shouldn’t drop whatever he’s doing to jump the next plane back to DC for something like this. It was silly to hound GW for his time at the ranch (from where he was in full communications with anyone he needed to communicate with) and the same is true of the Mighty O.

As for symbolism, the important symbolism is substance, but you can’t expect the Post to get that. What matters is what is real, and unfortunately, on substance as usual the O falls mighty short. The right message would be for the terr to have been on the first flight to Guantanamo, instead of being afforded an attorney and his moment in the sun. The right message would be a series of predator attacks on the people who set up this attack. The right message would be for the president to come up out of the surf and announce that until things have been sorted out that there would be no more inmates released from Guantanamo. The right message would be a moratorium on flights from Holland until they’ve sorted out the air marshal issue. The right message would be an announcement that Napolitano is stepping down to focus on family or health or whatever lame excuse they want to come up with.

The Left loves symbolism and isn’t much on substance. Get the substance right and I don’t care if you spend your vacation cutting brush or surfing.

If the 300 intended victims had actually been killed, would BO have put on a necktie when he made his address? Dropping in between rounds of golf, dressed for the links, seems a bit nonchalant.

Read the comments to the original article. Unfortunately, your sarcasm is the real attitude of lots of Post readers. Jackasses wondering what all the fuss is about.

We are in for some seriously dark, dark days ahead, folks.

We have Co-Presidents Emmanuel and Axelrod running the White House Executive Branch for the DNC.

That, right there, is damn near a tag line.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Agreed, but it so much fun to needle the left on their sanctimony about Bush's time away from the White House.

True. In any case, I never doubted GW's ability to run the White House from Texas, and I don't think O is capable of running the White House from the White House or anywhere else. He is not the worst president ever. He is the anti-president. He is public enemy number... I'm not sure, he's right up there with Pelosi, Reid, Osama, Soros, and Zawahiri. Osama and Zawahiri blow stuff up, but O and his clan are taking down the whole country.

Aacch... I'm getting on a rant...

You're right. From what I hear, Detroit looks like a war zone.

I'm hoping we can return him to Chicago before he does any more damage.
