President Obama wants us all to know hes taking seriously the attempted terrorist attack of Christmas Day and that his administration is doing all it can to ensure our safety. But his words would be a lot more convincing if not delivered during time snatched between rounds of golf, swimming and sunbathing.
The president of the United States is never really on vacation. The responsibilities of the nation's highest office cant be shed and, as the worlds most powerful leader, Obama can surely summon whatever resources he needs no matter his location. Nonetheless, theres something unsettling about the president not wanting to interrupt his plans to deal with what appears to be the most serious threat to the nations safety since 9/11.
Part of the issue is symbolic. Returning to Washington would have sent the world a powerful message of a president willing to drop everything and roll up his sleeves -- someone who really means business. It also would have set an example for the federal officials and workers charged with carrying out our national security policy. I cant imagine Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano initially being so sanguine about the system working if her boss had hotfooted it back to the Oval Office to personally check up on things. Work situations vary, sure, but in my experience theres always a lot less pressure when the boss is away.
By staying in Hawaii, the president has sent the message that the situation really isnt all that serious, that things can proceed just fine until hes back. And isnt it that kind of reasoning that emboldens our never-vacationing enemies into thinking Christmas Day is the perfect time for them to strike?

Oh, leave the poor guy alone. He’s tired, remember. He has done SO much hard work already, you know.
Guess we are lucky that Truman or Reagan or Roosevelt or even Lincoln, didn’t cry about “being tired” and going on endless vacations—when things did not go their way.
It's been a disaster for the doctrinaire Fabianists who run that thing ~ they can't say anything without getting blasted BIG TIME by many Freepers.
Some of the big dogs have been brought over to the Dark Side ~ or darned close to it ~ and are even now beginning to express misgivings about the Goober in Chief!
Sure, I'm over there practicing my best lines before I come back here, but I'm doing it for Ronnie, and maybe even Nixon ~ well, Fur Shur, I'm doing it for Nixon, and Martha Mitchell, and maybe even "The Hump" and and certainly for William Jenner and Homer Capehart.
The Post comments structure is rapidly warping toward a purely FreeRepublic format ~ copyright violations are inevitable.
Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning last November’s Presidential election:
Number of States won by: Obama: 19 McCain: 29
Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 McCain: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million
McCain: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Obama: 13.2 McCain: 2.1
Professor Olson adds: “In aggregate, the map of the territory McCain won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.
Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare...”
Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the “complacency and apathy” phase of Professor Tyler’s definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation’s population already having reached the “governmental dependency” phase.
Cheney and Palin are not in public office, though it'd be good to hear from them.
More ot the point would be current elected "Republicans" screaming and hollaring. Instead they sit and watch; never grasping or seizing any opportunity to save our Republic from Obama , Reid, Pelosi, Dodd, Frank, and the rest of the Marxists.
Why doesn’t he just stay there all the time? He’s just as effective at doing nothing there as he is in the WH.
This jacka$$ POS can stay anywhere he wants as long as it is beyond my range of vision.
Don’t allow this POS to return!
O-Hole’s “My Pet Goat” moment. But he FAILS!
Very obviously he is only animated by issues of either “racial justice” or wealth redistribution.
It’s clear that for every other Presidential responsibility—including national defense—his heart isn’t in it.
Not a problem.
We have Co-Presidents Emmanuel and Axelrod running the White House Executive Branch for the DNC.
Does anyone doubt that Obama is merely the figurehead, sort of a ceremonial position with little to do but be shunted around the world much like Prince Charles.
the sanitation guy is wearing gloves, so what does obama do? what an idiot.
Yup . . . TWP is telling Zero it's time to head East.
At least the POS bozo “HMFIC” is off the TV while away, please grant my wish that he never return!
Didn’t he say “call me if you need me” Did same thing during banking crisis last year.
Yep. How many mere minutes did Bush spend finishing story time with that group of kids before he hightailed it back to the White House, and then he was CRUCIFIED unmercifully for those minutes. Obama doesn’t even comment on the bomber for three freakin’ days and the MSM is doing everything in their power to cover for him and portray his absence as somehow being more Presidential.
I don’t blame him for staying in Hawaii.
After all, can you imagine the rage of Michelle if they would have to leave?
He figures its better to take the political hit.
True, but Obama isn't actually the President of the United States, and he is most certainly almost always on vacation.
>> leave the poor guy alone <<
Agreed. After all, it’s not as if he’s been doing something devious like hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
No - it’s an opinion column.
The people who really run this puppet president are in the White House 24/7. They write, he recites.
