Another holiday. Another sweep of smoke scofflaws.
Bay Area air pollution inspectors found 47 homes where wood fires were on Christmas Day during a Spare the Air alert when cold, unhealthy air was forecast.
The tally was more than double the 22 violators detected on Thanksgiving Day when the Bay Area Air Quality Management District also called a Spare the Air alert.
Violators get written warnings for a first offense and $400 fines for a second offense.
While critics have bashed the air district for intruding on a holiday burning tradition, a spokesman for the agency on Monday defended the Christmas crackdown as protecting public health from soot that can trigger asthma attacks, and aggravate other respiratory and heart problems.
"We know a lot of people like to burn on this holiday, but it's our duty to protect public health," said Ralph Borrmann, an air district spokesman.
Ten air district inspectors patrolled the Bay Area on Christmas to watch for and sniff out burn violators.

I had a real ripper yesterday. Gave the neighbor a bunch of dead tanoak on the condition he stack the little stuff for a burn. Since it was centered on a landing, I finished in about 2 hr. Most of the time was shoving it together, then pulling it apart. At least 30’ flames.
Well, I don’t live in the Bay Area but we did incidentally have a burn ban in effect and I did incidentally have a fire.

I've got the charcoal retort in the works. I'll need at least 2-1/2 yards of it for the planters this year. A neighbor gave me a rotted out 5,000 gallon steel water tank. It's half full of composting material as we speak (about 3-1/2 yards). I'll add the charcoal as soon as I get it felled, cooked, and crunched.
You should not allow the wood to rot either as it does the same thing! Therefore, I task you with gathering wood for the rest of your life and putting it into a freezer (but, wait, the extra electricity that it takes to run the freezer makes more carbon so, you mustgetmorewoodandputitintothefreezertomakeupfortheelectictysoyoucangetmorewoodandputitintothe...... pk, well, something like that anyway.

My brother lives near Cahpel Hill N.C. and he has two neighbors who are as lib as one gets.
David has 110 acres so there is always yard waste to burn to keep the property clean and he starts the fires with old tires folks have dumped along the road.
A touch of Kerocene and instant fire. And the smpke is terrible.
And the howels from the libs is music.

It is a regional thing, not state-wide. Part of the Mojave Desert is in Los Angeles and Kern Counties. If they banned wood stoves where I live, where it often gets below 0 degrees, there would be an armed revolt!
I believe it was at the Smithsonian that there is a huge exhibit of the various moths.

Agreed. My brother lives in Ridgecrest, in Kern County. He told me of such a ban, and I seem to remember it was a CA thing, not just regional. I have e-mailed him asking the specifics. I live in Flagstaff, AZ, and they are working on shutting down wood stoves here, and it gets mighty cold. Propane and natural gas are available so if/when they get their way, everybody can be taxed for heating their homes in accordance with any tax and cap or global redistribution the govt comes up with...I mean they can protect us all from the evil health hazards caused by heating homes with wood fires, never mind the control burns we choke on all summer long...

Couple things I do not understand.
Like Beatle exhibits you have different ones sometimes looking nearly exactly alike?
Also how do ya mount these multi colored beaut without disturbing the wings?
Butterfly World in Fort Lauderdale area is waaay cool.
Literally, there are times that you have to dissect the little moth (or beetle) sex organs to positively ID. And, there are some, which to the casual observer, look identical. But, to the trained eye are totally different. Mostly, it’s just reading lots of books and references.
Mounting the butterflies is not hard...it just takes time & patience. It is a bit of an “art” - but easily learned. It requires just a little specialized equiptment (the right forceps & pins really)
There are butterfly “rooms” in many places in the US (and worldwide now). Bfly World in Florida is one of the better ones in this country - that I have seen.
