Airlines: New rules keep passengers in seats
Associated Press ^ | Dec. 26, 2009 | JOAN LOWY

Posted on 12/26/2009 11:51:05 AM PST by Presbyterian Reporter

Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing

The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.

Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.

Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows.

The TSA declined to confirm the new restrictions.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement Saturday that passengers flying to the U.S. from overseas may notice extra security, but she said the measures "are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere."

A transportation security official speaking on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly said passengers traveling internationally could see increased security screening at gates and when they check their bags, as well as additional measures on flights such as stowing carryons and personal items before the plane lands.

A Nigerian passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam allegedly attempted to start a fire as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Friday, according to authorities. The incident has sparked a major international terrorism investigation.

Air Canada said it was limiting passengers to one carryon bag in response to a request from the U.S. and Canadian governments.

Get ready for a lot of wet seat cussions.

It's guaranteed to get a lot worse than that.

A recent report on airport food (to further complicate things) established that the odds of getting food poisoning or other unhealthy nasties is several times greater than non airport eating establishments.

I can attest to that.
On a trip from Sacramento to Baltimore-Wahington in 2007 I had a stopover of a couple of hours in Chicago. I had a meal at one of the airport restaurants and got food poisoning. Which kicked in right after takeoff. I was told I had to stay in my seat. My reply was, "well, get ready for a real bad 2-hour flight; this seat will be a mess very very soon, and I feel sorry for anyone sitting within 5 feet.

I was allowed to leave my seat and things were --- ummm--- explosive.

I have it on good authority, that rules changes will be put into effect soon, that restricts all passengers from boarding all flights until 1/2 hour after takeoff.

Screw them. If I see a guy of middle eastern extraction doing something strange on a plane, I’ll unbuckle my seatbelt and go. They can charge me with whatever they effing want, but at least I hope I’ll be alive to face those charges.

The long captivation that take place on the tarmacs at times, can also a very risky situation for these people.

Life threatening.
But "political correctness" is demonstrably even more life-threatening.

Since 911, guess which one has prevailed?

So Insensitive, Maybe we should ask why they would be worried about this in the first place since they are supposed to make sure these people and objects aren’t on the flight in the first place.

The fact that the person who wants to blow up the plane can’t get to their carry on will not doubt only be a minor hurdle to blowing up the plane if it is only 2 ft above their head.

Use profiling....make THEM change their pattern...we can pick up on changes much easier than a constant.

Yeah, lets keep the muslims in their seats the entire flight. Better yet, off the planes entirely.

Profiling? Discriminatory? You bet! 'cause guess what PC fans, it isn't Lutherans, Catholics, Jews, or even Atheists trying to blow up Americans.

I have been really tempted to print up some little cards to use at the airport that say, “Like the security and screen process? Thank a Muslim.” Prolly better a button, because they would just throw away my little cards.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was introduced on 5/18/1977 by Senator Ted Kennedy. The bill was cosponsored by the nine Senators: Birch Bayh, James O. Eastland, Jake Garn, Walter Huddleston, Daniel Inouye, Charles Mathias, John L. McClellan, Gaylord Nelson, and Strom Thurmond.

The act was signed into law by President Carter in 1978.

Any big surprises here?
The action of these individuals, judged by subsequent developments and the blood od thousands of real victims, speaks to the poverty of ideas, reason, sense of proportion of all those individuals.

The ones who are dead, good riddance.
The ones who are still alive should be stripped of their jobs and pensions, and be prohibited ever from holding office at any level.

Hell, I would think life terms for stupidity would not be inappropriate.

Again: "We meant well" is not an acceptable excuse for consummate stupidity, at the continuing cost of thousands of lives and millions of serious inconveniences.

One last note:

I see red when, in researching this truly incompetent law, all subsequent official government analyses and reports deliberately go out of their way NOT to list any the names above.

It took me a long time to find those names.

I’m hyperactive. What am I supposed to do for an hour if I can’t have my book, my computer, my Kindle, or my crochet in my lap???

Tough is out lady. Oh, and make sure you don't hide that old copy of their inflight magazine that they will have wanted to collect.

Idiots, all of them and we just sit by and take it in the name of political correctness. Screw them all, both the Feds for the inane ineffective rules and especially groups like CAIR that constantly fight to give special privileges to a class of people always scheming methods to kill us.

The terrorist got up and went to the bathroom to prepare his bomb. Luckily, he didn’t mix the explosive mixture properly, so it didn’t explode, just burned his privates off.

You nailed it! But the ACORN Administration has yet to admit that the killing of our troops at Fort Hood was a terrorist attack. It was the first attack since 9/11/01. The Bush Administration successfully prevented further attacks for over 7 years, but our defenses against terrorists have now been greatly diminished in just a few months on Obama’s watch. This is not surprising, since Obama and his fellow travelers are giving aid and comfort to Islamism.

If true, it’s quite dumb. If I’m a terrorist, I just move my attack back an hour and still kill hundreds of infidels. If I’m an innocent passenger, I’m ticked off, but no safer.
