Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing
The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.
Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.
Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows.
The TSA declined to confirm the new restrictions.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement Saturday that passengers flying to the U.S. from overseas may notice extra security, but she said the measures "are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere."
A transportation security official speaking on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly said passengers traveling internationally could see increased security screening at gates and when they check their bags, as well as additional measures on flights such as stowing carryons and personal items before the plane lands.
A Nigerian passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam allegedly attempted to start a fire as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Friday, according to authorities. The incident has sparked a major international terrorism investigation.
Air Canada said it was limiting passengers to one carryon bag in response to a request from the U.S. and Canadian governments.

The real need in society is for teleportation, at least until the TSA figures out a way to make that impossible as well.
That's a No-No.
I really sympathize with folks that have to rely on flying for business and in many cases just to be able to see family because of long distances and time restraints.
I love flying but will never fly commercial again, I endured enough searches (I seem to set the bloomin’ security scanners everytime!) to say enough of that.
Now look at this nonsense, very dehumanizing.
AH! Right - can’t do that here.
Better to pick on 90 years olds in wheelechairs.
Upon arrival at your seat, you will find a pillow, blanket and a diaper, LOL!
I got out of one trip week after next. Can't get out of the cross-country flight late January. But I may be able to get out of the February trip to Europe, and maybe convince my boss I don't need to be going over there any more.
If this rule sticks, I've had it. I'll go from a job with well over 100k miles a year to one with zero (the position is there is I want it, and I am thinking I might want it now).
This directive tells you and me to stay in your seat. The terrorist scumbag was in his seat an hour before landing. If he had started his fuse on final approach, no one would be able to stop him.
Our tortured unwillingness to admit to the nature of the threat we face or to the identity of the enemy is going to get a lot of innocent people killed.
I am sick of this. We only fly when we have to, it has wrecked travel for our family.
Why?
Too many absolutely total official and regular morons in America actually believe that 2000-3000 victims a year is a small price to pay for "political correctness."
I suggest we keep a list of who those morons are. Tha't all I'm willing to say.
I’m still waiting for this man who proclaimed himelf to be a Christian to show any signs of it.
Every time I fly and take my shoes off to pass through the screening, I get REALLY PISSED at Islam and its Islamderthals. I don’t think anybody else ever has the reaction I have. Even worse is see some burka-wearing slave pass through the security checkpoints while I am undressing.
The new rule is a pretty lame liberal window-dressing feel-good action. The perp had the bomb strapped to his leg.
Why doesn’t TSA just pass a rule “No bombs strapped to body allowed” rather than keeping books, computers and ipods off of laps for the last hour of a flight?
The nation is run by freaking idiots.
***Let the Muslims fly their own airlines!!!!***
NO! Muslims should be forced to go by ship or train!
Muslim Airlines -— targets within 1 hr of US territory.
The government solution is always to punish the innocent in hopes of stopping the guilty.
Thankfully, I have no place where I might need to fly. I will drive, and I will be armed. That’s how I travel.
YES!
And blow them up at will.
I noticed on a recent flight on Southwest they were very strict about congregating up front around the bathroom. They told a number of people to go back to their seats until the bathroom was empty and cited security reasons.
Muslims should be barred from this country.
In your face, terrorists!
Now you'll have to access the overhead compartments an hour-and-a-half before landing!!!
How ya like me now!
Stupid idiots. Mess with America and this is what you get, yo.
Some of us older persons have reasons to pee more often.
The captain better give warnings about the hour sit still window of time so we can make that last pit stop!!
When I have to go——I HAVE TO GO!
