Catholic Group Supports Senate on Abortion Aid

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK December 25, 2009 WASHINGTON — In an apparent split with Roman Catholic bishops over the abortion-financing provisions of the proposed health care overhaul, the nation’s Catholic hospitals have signaled that they back the Senate’s compromise on the issue, raising hopes of breaking an impasse in Congress and stirring controversy within the church.

The Senate bill, approved Thursday morning, allows any state to bar the use of federal subsidies for insurance plans that cover abortion and requires insurers in other states to divide subsidy money into separate accounts so that only dollars from private premiums would be used to pay for abortions.

Just days before the bill passed, the Catholic Health Association, which represents hundreds of Catholic hospitals across the country, said in a statement that it was “encouraged” and “increasingly confident” that such a compromise “can achieve the objective of no federal funding for abortion.” An umbrella group for nuns followed its lead.

The same day, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called the proposed compromise “morally unacceptable.”

Are insurers really going to be that transparent about abortion payouts vs. premiums?

As they administrators are most likely graduates of fine outstanding catholic schools like Notre Dame and Georgetown, should we be surprised?

I think I’ll suspend judgment on this one. The Times is rather vague about who spoke and what they said. And frankly, the Times simply lies when it’s convenient.

In other words, I don’t believe this story, without seeing a fuller version from a more trustworthy source.

Also with all the wheeling and dealing that is going on in secret here, any and all “compromises” can be backed out and nobody will be the wiser until Bummer has signed the piece of feces.

I’m with you. This is too vague to come to any conclusions yet.

Disinformation. The hospitals repeat that they oppose the use of federal funds to support abortion. If the Times were an honest newspaper instead of an agenda driven rag, that would be the headline/lead paragraph.

CHAUSA Comment Regarding Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2009

"Especially now that a public health insurance option is no longer on the table, we are increasingly confident that Senator Casey's language can achieve the objective of no federal funding for abortion. We urge Congress to continue its work toward the goal of health reform that protects life at all stages while expanding coverage to the greatest possible number of people in our country.

Shouldn’t that be “Catholic In Name Only” Group?

No REAL Catholic group could ever support a bill that condones abortion.

Lumping abortion coverage in with the other nine yards is evil even if they do agree to separate the money. Uncle Sam should not have his hands in abortion coverage at all.

But again the whole plan is evil. Nobody even knows if the “operation” is going to be successful. What ever happened to “keep your laws off my body,” my dear liberals?

Exactly.
wtf?
The title of the article contradicts the contents.
Our local Catholic hospital has said in no uncertain terms that it will in no way yield to performing abortions.

The caveat in all this of course, is the power that the future secretary of Health and Human services will have in defining “qualified health plans” and the ability to accredit hospitals or deny accredidtaion based on adherence to the rules outlined.

The “compromise” / “working with” statements simply mean that they are waiting and listening and probably engaed in some talks as to how they might be able to stay accredited if they decide to draw a firm line against abortion.

We must pray for our nation and our children, born and unborn.
I do not think the Catholic Hospitals will waiver on this issue. If accredidation becomes tenuous, then more lawsuits on this assinine bill will follow.

They are fracking fools.

As are the Bishops for falling into the socialist trap of supporting this bill if....

They are out of their league when it comes to playing in the hard core and evil world of politics.

The Bishops have made it acceptable for Catholics to support this bill, in error.
