The Best Christmas Present Ever: Senator DeMint Objects to the Appointment of the Conferees
Red State ^ | 12/24/09 | Dan Perrin

Posted on 12/24/2009 1:26:00 PM PST by tips up

When Senator DeMint engineered, and Republican Leader McConnell actually objected to the appointment of the conferees, he was really handing the ball off to the left wingers — progressives if you will — and now they have their shot to either hold their own clan members who are against the Senate compromises and force them to vote No, or have their policy demands be ignored and take the crumbs from Senator Nelson’s and Senator Lieberman’s table.

Now, because of the Senator DeMint’s objection, unless the House votes for the Senate bill unchanged — which is highly unlikely (see below) — then the Senate ObamaCare bill must be amended on the House floor to gain the votes they need to pass it on the House floor. And because of Senator DeMint’s objection to the appointment of the conferees, there will be no conference, or conference report.

If the House amends the Senate bill, they then have to send the amended bill back to the Senate — where all the 60 vote margin cloture votes still apply — cloture on the motion to proceed, and cloture to end the filibuster and cloture on any amendment.

Do I believe that this objection to the appointment of the conferees will kill ObamaCare? Yes, if the progressives or those 64 House Democrats who voted for the Stupak amendment do not roll over and play dead.

This monkey wrench may explain why the White House is putting out the word that it wants the health care bill to pass the House after the State of the Union, in February.

Health Care Reform i.e. Obamacare, will slowly slip into the background, to not be seen until after the SOTU speech.

Obama is betting an Obama SOTU speech can rally the nation and stop the massive hemorrhaging of support for Dems on all issues.

If after the SOTU, Obama, et.al. think Obamacare passage would cost them the Senate in November, 2010, it dies.

With the Democans in control they can change the rules at a whim and the Republicats can't do a thing about it. This is all posturing for the dumbed down voters who will “cheer” wildly and pull the lever for the wascally Wepubicans again in 2010 and 2012.

Very good arguments made over at Red state, but bottom line the dem leadership w/the Joker have so much of our money to buy all the votes they need and wont hesitate to do so as they have already displayed.

The more we can get them to buy out in the open the more we will score in 08.

It is interesting but I think what is indicated here is an opportunity for far-lefties in the House to play the Ben Nelson/Mary Landrieu-game and “sell” their votes to Obamsky for leftie pork. What the so-called Blue Dogs can do, so too can the commies.

This strategy puts the left in a box. Pass something and alienate the far left or stick to principles and hold their base, but not pass anything.

The FireDogLake gal (serious lefty) is pushing to scrap the bill since it doesn’t have the public option. Let the left chew on themselves.

How many times are they going to have to wheel this guy in at 1 AM to vote?? You'd think they would be fragile with this guy.

I hope everyone realizes that if the health care reform bill somehow dies in the House it will be the death knell of the Democrat Party—causing a splintering off of its far left base.

So, to that end, I think the bill will pass the House in pretty much the condition it is in now—with some goodies added for far leftie capitulation votes. Once those votes come in, the lulu bloggers and daily kooks and such will be relegated to background noise.

People like Frank and Waters and Waxman and such are not gonna be led by daily kooks—it’s gonna be vice versa.
