Five Republican representatives Chris Smith, Frank Wolf, Joe Pitts, Trent Franks and Anh "Joseph" Cao have written a letter to Ugandan President Yoweri Mouseveni pressing him to stop pending legislation that would severely criminalize homosexuality and sometimes impose the death penalty for homosexual acts.
In the letter, which you can read in full here, the men say their religious faith requires them to oppose the legislation because it contradicts the "foundational Christian belief in the inherent dignity and worth of all men and women."
The Ugandan law has become a hot topic in America because, as National Public Radio reports, "U.S. evangelicals have long had a close relationship with top Ugandan leaders." Some see the influence of American lawmakers in the drafting of the legislation, which is popular in Uganda.
"A U.S. evangelical group called The Family reportedly includes U.S. lawmakers who have shown great interest in Ugandan affairs," according to NPR. "The bill's proponents are reluctant to talk about whether The Family supports them in any way."

AIDS.....Don’t the gays impose their OWN death sentence on each other?
The only person on Earth talking about this is Rachel Maddow. Why allow yourself to be baited by her into responding this nonsense? Idiots.
I guess you don't find Moses, Paul, Jesus and our Founders to be reasonable. I find them to be, though.
Applause!!! Well said lj.
these so called republicans need to shut the hell up.
Are they gong to write to every country which has no pro pervert laws now?
warren can piss off, I’ve had enough of him since last year.
nail on head
Sheesh, do your own perverse thing in your bedroom, but don't kill people for doing it. Sick.
Why can't those people ever produce anything? Why must they forever be on the World teat?
I have more respect for the primitive tribes of the Amazon who want nothing more that to be left alone rather than most of Africans who want stuff from the West. Screw them. Let's feed the poor children with verification and let the adults just DIE off if they won't bother to work.
Oh, btw, how's all those millions of condoms working out for them? What? They still pump out babies they can't take care of? AIDS is still a big problem even with Bush's conservative compassion?
If I were King of the World, here are my solutions for domestic and international problems:
1. Term limits and reduced Congressional sessions in Congress;
2. Sunset clauses on all US legislation other than defense appropriations;
3. All Congresspersons subjected to laws they impose;
4. Line item veto;
5. Repeal numerous amendments - take your pick;
6. Make all legislation subject to strict Constitutional intent;
7. More later...
International policy:
1. 90 days notice to North Korea to stop their crap or they get NUKED! No possible retaliation against South Korea.
2. 90 days notice to Iran to stop their new uranium enrenchment facilities and nuke trigger tech or they get blown into their 7th century that they so endear. Sorry for the peaceful Western loving populace. But better them than us.
3. China stop your manipulation of your currency. Stop threatening the Democracy of Taiwan.
4. United Nations communist wannabes get a clue for what works in Western civilization or we make you leave our shores. Tell their little dictatorships where to shove it. They want to complain...SWAT escorts them out country.
5. Tell Hugo Chavez if he gets his Russian missles, we will destroy him, yesterday. No ifs or buts. He's deaded.
6. Tell Cuba, you're next on the list if you get the same weaponry.
7. Tell every nation in the world that we're done playing nice if you want to frig with us. If you want to play nice then we will. If not, reap the wrath of a sleeping giant once again.
8. Change the Rules Of Engagement (ROE) in Iraq and all the Stans. We will kill anyone within your borders who threaten our population.
9. Any foreign or domestic terrorist will be subject to THE worst possible consequences. Kill one American - 1000 die. Kill 100 Americans or strong Allies - an entire population dies! Kill more - Mecca/Medina stops existing. The billion Muslims, including the so-called moderates fight back, kill the frig out them, also.
I have more, but most of all NUKE the frig out of Iran! Yesterday!
Think Trident submarines. Kill, kill, kill before those who want our children dead. I'd prefer their children die before mine. Got problem?
Last thought: Russia nor China would stop us. Russia actually cares about their children so they understand MAD, and China needs our economy.
I'm a student of the Earp/Clanton conflict in Tombstone. I realize that the Earps were a little oppressive in their enforcement of Tombstone laws, but they did what they had to do against the Clantons and McLaurys and their western gang know as the Cowboys. It was called keeping the peace and so they had to dead those murdering cattle rustlers. Ask me about the "Vendetta Ride" sometime, I've read many books. They had the right idea - kill those who won't keep the peace. That's what I would do if I were King of the World.
Ah, yes - our cadre of RINO’s. Bye, bye in the coming elections, jerks.
Just curious, lj. would you approve the same penalties on heterosexual oral and anal sex, and promiscuity (defined as sexual contact outside of an exclusively monogamous couple?)
My concern is not with Uganda’s laws, but our Congressmen making a big to-do out of it. Why don’t they make a protest about sharia laws in Muslim countries which are infinitely more horrible and the legal attacks against members of other religions in such Muslim countries?
Compare how many homosexuals are killed etc according to laws of various countries, compared to how many Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Hindus are killed by Muslims in accordance with Koranic law.
Or other atrocities.
There is absolutely no comparison.
And regarding sodomy, I’m fine with it being illegal. It was for hundreds of years and no one minded. If people perform such acts in private no one will know or care.
Death penalty no.
But anti-sodomy laws have been extant since time immemorial. One good thing about them is that if rape is involved, the crime is legally worse if sodomy is involved, and that is as it should be.
Anal sex in particular is a filthy and unhealthy act no matter who does it. Making it illegal won’t stop people who want to do it but it will stop making it socially acceptable via jokes, movies, etc thus encouraging young people and teeneagers to try it since it’s made to be on a par with normal sexual relations.
This view may be unpopular now, but it certainly has been the social norm up until fairly recently.
Making sodomy illegal will never involve people busting doors in; it merely keeps private what should be private. I remember some years ago when I was active doing the lists when a young girl went to a sex ed class, learned about sodomy, and cried to her mother, thinking that it meant when she married, she’d have to practice sodomy. This is disgusting and horrible.
And if there's no complainant? No prosecution.
As far as the schools go, they should stick to the anatomy and physiology of normal reproduction. No reason for perverse acts to be discussed at all; and if a question arises from a student, it should be clearly and briefly pointed out that many such acts (e.g. anal penetration) are illegal and inherently abusive.
On Uganda: it's obviously true that people with hidden agendas, pressure groups, actvists, and their media allies push some dubious issues to the top of the priority list, and make other issues disappear.
So, "Why should U.S. Republicans speak out on Ugandan gay issues now, when worldwise, stunning numbers of religious believers are being driven into exile, imprisoned, and murdered, and many other atrocities are being committed"? A fair enough question, but I would never take a person to task for coming out publically against the killing of members of a disfavored group.
I should read the whole article and find out exactly under what circumstances the proposed death penalty would be administered. This is all supposition, anyway, law is pending.
We’re pretty much on the same page - ;-) - just stinks to me that the Congressmen are silent as the tomb about Muslim atrocities that happen daily. And all of a sudden are outraged about a proposed law.
Motives count, big time.
Bravo for Uganda for not allowing the homosexualization of their country.
You have only named one disease. Male homos are the #1 vector for the spread of human infectious diseases. They spread disease like a typhoid mary thru deviant acts and syphilis is only one disease for which they hold the record—there are dozens more.
The point, dickweed, is that certain Americans had a hand in validating the law. A hand they now feel embarrassed by.
“Dickweed”, eh? Someone has his panties all twisted up.
