Hot Christmas gift: Suicide pills

(Warning: This story contains content that may offend some readers.)

Elderly people are now buying their loved ones suicide kits as Christmas gifts, according to a prominent euthanasia physician nicknamed "Dr. Death."

Dr. Philip Nitschke, founder of Exit International and author of "The Peaceful Pill Handbook," has explained the use of legal drugs, inert gases, plastic bags and other methods for committing suicide to audiences all over the world, including in U.S. cities such as San Francisco, Calif., and Anaheim, Calif.

He told Australia's Herald-Sun a so-called "peaceful pill" is being developed from Nembutal, the favored drug for ending life. Nembutal is the same drug that killed famous actress Marilyn Monroe. It's mostly used by veterinarians as an anesthetic and euthanasia drug for animals.

The drug is widely available in Mexico for around $30 a bottle, and Nitschke told ABC News in September he has accompanied terminally ill patients to buy the drug.

"You pour it into a glass. You drink it. You follow that with your whiskey, and I've never seen anyone finish their whiskey," he said. "They put the glass down, and they're gone – gone to sleep, and death follows shortly thereafter. To the outside observer, nothing looks more peaceful."

"Our main opposition is from religious groups who would still be getting outraged at Easter, or any other time of year for that matter," he said in a "peaceful pill" seminar Dec. 16. "There are people here in this room who I know have bought that (euthanasia medication) for their loved ones as Christmas presents."

That's because you are promoting MURDER you jackass!

Pity these death advocates never practice what they preach.

Darn right they don’t. They’re the kind that would be searching for every means to prolong their own lives. They’d be screaming for a doctor, a priest or the latest cure or potion or pill just for a few more years, months or moments of life.

Personally I am a little conflicted on this.

I am against Abortion. I am for Executions for capitol crimes. I am against murder, but have no problem with killing in war or self-defense. I have read that the commandment Thou shalt not kill is really more closely translated to Thou shalt not commit murder.

I don't like the idea of gov’t or anyone promoting suicide to thin out the “unwanted or drains on society”. But I am having a hard time seeing the wrong in someone making an individual choice about it. I have thought about it to the extent that, personally, I would hate to be elderly and dependent on others. I think the chance of neglect or mistreatment is high and I don't want to be trapped in that type of existence. I would hate to be mentally alert trapped in a non-functioning body or physically healthy but mentally gone.

I am hoping God takes me quickly before I get to one of those situations....

One of my favorite bumper stickers:

“When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers”

God the Son holds the keys to birth, the keys to death, and the keys to Hades.

Those who attempt to usurp that authority are acting in a state of mind independent of faith through Christ.

Sin was settled on the Cross, but not the issues of good and evil, which will be settled in time.

Today we are tested in any number of ways, but how we respond or react provides testimony in both the angelic conflict and to our level of sanctification to qualify for further reward at the bema seat. As long as we are alive, God still has a Plan for us in His Plan. Rationalizing suicide for whatever reason fails to remain in faith through Christ in our thinking.

Very well said.
I believe this is the truth.

But I am also fiercely independent and don’t want to be in a dependent situation as stated earlier. That is why I am conflicted on it.

Take care of yourself....and don’t PLAN to be “dependent.” Sure, it COULD happen...but chances are it won’t....

"To the outside observer, nothing looks more peaceful."

You can fix that real quick by giving it to criminals on death row. The aCLU would be screaming bloody murder about how "cruel and unusual" it is.

Nembutal was a pretty common drug in the 70’s. Seconal too. You’d really have to take a lot of it to go into respitory/cardiac failure. A bottle of Tylonol will kill you just as certain, albeit by some unpleasant kidney failure over the next 30 days.

We all have volition, but the object of our faith makes the difference between sin and fellowship. If we are strictly independent, then we also are in a state of sin, or missing the target.

Too many people confuse sin for immorality. Immorality is indeed sinful, but any good act performed independent of faith through Christ is also sinful, although still qualifying as human good, but not Divine good.

God provides. Our challenge is to remain in fellowship with Him in all things by what He provides. We might bear our own burden, but He provides. Keep or faith in Him in all things, no matter what the challenge, and you will always be a winner.
