WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A "bunker buster" bomb with more than 10 times the explosive power of its predecessor is to be put into service by the United States next December, six months later than previously scheduled, the Defense Department told Reuters on Friday.
The deployment's timing may help shape new calculations in long standoffs with Iran and North Korea over their nuclear programs, much of which are believed to be underground to avoid detection and enhance their chances of surviving an attack.
"Funding delays and enhancements to the planned test schedule have pushed the capability availability date to December 2010," Tara Rigler, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said in an email.

Under pressure from the Nobel Peace Prize Weiner?
The enemy needs more time to dig deeper.
We already have the capability to go as deep or deeper than the new one. It can be done by a string of bunker busters. One hits the target followed by another which digs down even deeper. This has already been proven. The best part is it can be delivered by non-modified aircraft.
This may be a planted story to lull the Iranians into carelessness.
And we publicize this information because????????
If we're not going to need them, perhaps we might lend them to our Israeli friends for a spell?
Barack 0bama is turning out to be kryptonite for America.
We need to send him to a different planet.
So that Zero can say, "Well, I can't make a preemptive strike because the bunker busters are not ready yet!"
I prefer using the mass driver from our secret lunar base...
Niffty idea BTW. Why tungsten when concrete is so much cheaper?
“So that Zero can say, “Well, I can’t make a preemptive strike because the bunker busters are not ready yet!”
Between that and several Israeli pronouncements, it pretty much means that nothing will happen for at least a year by which time Iran should be ready to launch on Tel Aviv, Rome and NYC.
Cheers!

Doesn’t have to be tungsten but I was also thinking of what is happening to the steel casing of heavy wall drill stand if its on a re-entry and facing extreme temperatures.
Might be better if they had a 1” thick ablative silica sleeve identical to the space shuttle tiles. Like a protective blanket and some stabilizing fins these orbital darts so to speak will be impacting at lets figuratively say Mach 6.
With a dense inner core of a tough super hard metal this would and should act the same as a Abrams penetration munitions round. Except it will burrow deep shedding its outer casing and the inner dart will punch through any concrete and “spall” shedding high speed plasma style particulates that will burn through anything.
Of course the experts building munitions have a better handle on all this and I’m sure this is an old concept.
How ‘bout depleted uranium? In Iran’s case make that depleted uranium and CO-60?
A fence like McAuther was thinking about using to divide the Koreas in the 50’s...
