Garrison Keillor, self-appointed cultural representative of regular old Americans, ruffled some feathers yesterday with a mildly xenophobic rant about Christmas. After lambasting a Unitarian church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for spiritual piracy and cultural elitismtweaking the lyrics of Silent Night for a singalong, in laymans termshe turned his ire in a different direction:
And all those lousy holiday songs by Jewish guys that trash up the malls every year, Rudolph and the chestnuts and the rest of that dreck. Did one of our guys write Grab your loafers, come along if you wanna, and well blow that shofar for Rosh Hashanah? No, we didnt. Christmas is a Christian holidayif youre not in the club, then buzz off.
The Baltimore Sun got some angry letters about this, and understandably so. Hating on Irving Berlins White Christmas is, in a way, the same thing as the American Family Associations boycott of the Gap for its failure to use the word Christmas in ads: both actions reject a dilution of Christmas by outsiders, just in slightly different ways. It certainly does not accord with the generous holiday spirit. And anyway: Dreck? Really? Whos co-opting whom?
Here's the link to the original article in the Baltimore Sun.

Woe´-be`gone` a. 1. Beset or overwhelmed with woe; immersed in grief or sorrow; woeful. So woe-begone was he with pains of love.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam Co.
Garrison needs a Barney Frank hug.
Garrulous Keister should just go away.
Irving B wrote White C? Did not know that. Kind of funny when you think about it...
Oh, heck the spirit of Christmas is supposed to be love, isn’t it?
If they write NICE songs....after all, wouldn’t you hate to see what Eminem might come up with.
Always good when a big Democrat crams his foot in his mouth.
Oh woe.
Wonder how Garrison feels about Woody Guthrie (Gentile) writing Hannukah songs?
who gave him a wedgie?
Just a few minutes ago, I saw something really strange. A group was singing, “we wish you a merry Christmas’ then told everyone “Merry Christmas” at the end.
They didn’t mention Kwanzaa or any Muslim holidays either.
It was Dish Network.
As a radio fan, when in the right frame of mind, I find him and his program funny and nostalgic, and mostly harmless. But he also speaks his mind, and isn’t very PC at times (like this) - and makes public the side of liberalism that is often denied or kept private - showing that libs can be just as prejudiced, even racist, as anyone.
Well, I wouldn’t have put the onus on any one particular ethnicity, but our culture does have a bad habit of putting the X in Xmas, burying all trace of its Christian underpinnings. We seem to prefer sappy sentimentality and materialism to the message and good news of Christ. And that’s sad.
While we’re on the topic, have you ever considered the nasty meaning of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”? How the path to avoid ridicule for one’s differences is to suck up and be sucked-up to? Not the message I wanted my kids to take to heart.
Money. If it sells anyone will do it.Let’s all humm.:)
Well, it is all about the birth of a Jewish guy anyway. Isn’t it?
Minnesota (pron. ~min.ee.SO.ta) The land of Jesse “the body” Ventura, Al “Stuart Smiley” Franken, and Garrison “hypocrite” Keillor. They are all the bastard children of Walter “big loser” Mondale.
You don't have to agree with him to get what he's doing.
Sorry, this one's not only a non-story, it's a lie. I hate when our side does that, especially in the case of a jerk like Keillor.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is perfect Government-School propaganda. CONFORMITY is the highest value. TEAR DOWN anyone who is “different.” And the way to get ahead is to be picked for some honor by an AUTHORITY FIGURE.
Actually, it's just the opposite. That thing that looks like an "X" is the Greek letter "Chi," the first letter in "Christ." The "Chi Rho" is an ancient Christian symbol, still found in many churches, and is the "CHR" in "CHRISTOS."
Now, if we can just get more churches to put the "Mass" back into "Christ Mass". . . .
