A major storm was expected to bury the Washington region Saturday with what forecasters said could be the largest snowfall to hit the area in six years and the greatest December accumulation in more than 70 years.
Accumulations of 15 inches or more in the city and up to 24 inches in parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains were possible, according to the National Weather Service. The snow was expected to cause significant disruptions for shoppers, travelers and revelers on the last weekend -- and biggest shopping day -- before Christmas.
Especially large amounts of snow could accumulate southeast of the Interstate 95 corridor, where "paralyzing" near-blizzard conditions could occur, said AccuWeather.com chief meteorologist Joe Bastardi.
Snow was expected to start falling early Saturday and to increase in intensity all day, as bands of precipitation, fed by moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and driven by a cold northeast wind, sweep over the area.
Temperatures will remain in the 20s and low 30s, aggravated by gusty winds of 20 to 25 mph, the Weather Service said. The snow was not expected to taper off until Sunday morning.
Severe highway, rail and air travel disruptions were anticipated. Some airlines were canceling flights Friday, and authorities urged people to stay off the roads. Southwest Airlines said it was allowing customers using six East Coast airports to rebook tickets without penalties.
A state of emergency was declared in Virginia, where the National Guard was on alert to help with emergency transportation. In the District, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) declared a snow emergency, effective at 7 a.m. Saturday. All vehicles must be removed from the city's snow routes or they will be ticketed and towed.

Thanks. I’ve got the “plenty of beverages” part covered.:)
Update! We now have about an inch of snow. Depending on which news channel you listen to we’re supposed to get 6-20 inches.
And while I'm adjusting my tinfoil, wasn't there some other vote that got shuttled through on a Christmas eve about a hundred years ago ?
I think I'll need more Reynolds wrap.
The entire area should be imprisoned in a big block of ice.
Yeah, we all know how well that worked out for Pharaoh...
Cheers!
Gosh-—don’t forget the hot chocolate and a candy bar! LOL!
They get TV ratings if they predict more.
Jobs where you can lie all the time and get away with it:
1. President
2. Congress Person
3. Weather Person
Just outside of Balitmore, MD...it’s already started snowing. We’re supposed to get 1-2 feet. Global warming, eh Zero?
Just started here in Perry Hall MD,
I have family in Prince George. I hope they do well with the bad weather.
You live in Williamsburg, VA and are crabby because you are stuck there in a snowfall during Christmastime? Go rent a horse drawn sleigh and enjoy the sights.
Woohoo! - a white Christmas for you there in Wisconsin!
.
A few momentary interruptions on the internet
Hope the fiberoptic cables do not get problems from the storm
God sure has a good sense of humor.
God’s mighty hand at work here. They wont be able to get the old KKK man Byrd in with his wheel chair. I hope they don’t carry him in on a stretcher. This is hilarious. Is Lieberman really snowed in or just funning these communists?
Gary’s only saying 3-4” as of now. But as you know, we’ve had some WONDERFULLY WHITE Christmas Eves around here!
Also some darn cold ones. We had -24 on Christmas Eve about 10 years ago. That was fun! Bundle up the babies and have Husband warm up the car for about 3 hours before you could go anywhere.
Aside from winter sports, winter sucks. ;)
Ohhhhhhh - got it now.
Didn’t know about that airport - its location or surroundings....so bet you are right - there’s not much around there, I imagine, that could put up those kids for the night....so I guess they are sleeping at the airport. Been there done that. It’s not the end of the world.
Someone above posted that Asheville has 17 inches so far....wow.
I would wonder myself if ever in history has Washington been unable to function during a blizzard, thing of it is that why should they? Its almost Christmas and families need to be together instead of being stranded in an airport concourse.
Obama will just have to realize his plans of the socialistic utopia of America will have to take a back seat to God made planning. Sure as a sign can ever be this is one that I myself see as the power of the most powerful.
Hopefully Obama won’t try to force people to work on Christmas day, or during a blizzard to satisfy his Marxists dreams.
Yessiree! I truly believe that this storm is going to change the tide of this insanity and stop the great lie.
I will also give it up for Leiberman because he recognized the advantage of using Mother Nature and getting out of town. Now, he gets to say “I would have voted for it but I couldn’t”.
I just hope other Dems are on the same page, take a cue, leave town, then blame the weather when they can’t get back to cast a vote and this healthcare bill fails. Let it snow!
I have slowness here almost every evening when a lot of people are on. In the daytime it is faster!
One night this week Free Republic went down for a brief spell. You weren’t around so didn’t know that. I even went to Yahoo but no one had posted.
I find that my life is SO much easier now that I gave up trying to control the weather!
“Serenity NOW!” :)
