More details emerge on Target's probe of immigrant workers

WALNUT CREEK — Almost a month after an internal probe pushed 50 immigrant workers out of their jobs at a downtown Target store, interviews with former and current store employees portray a mass firing that was selective, planned in advance and confusing to many of those forced out.

Sparked by an allegation that illegal immigrants worked on the night shift, the Walnut Creek store last month attracted the attention of the Minneapolis corporate headquarters of the 1,700-store chain. The company sent a team to investigate, according to several people close to the incident.

By the end of the second week of November, 50 Latino employees — at least half of whom say they were given no warning of what was coming — were out of their jobs. It was not a layoff, Target said last week.

Nor did the 50 employees quit, said Rocio Avila of the San Francisco-based legal advocacy group La Raza Centro Legal, which has intervened on their behalf.

But whether the Latino workers were fired, or were otherwise compelled to leave on their own because they did not have the proper documents, remains a point of contention. Target says the store questioned some workers in mid-November about their eligibility to work in the United States, prompting most of those workers to voluntarily resign. It will not say any more than that.

I try to stay away from Target, I'm sure that EVERYTHING that they do has to do with fractions of a percent of their bottom line, and hiring and retaining illegals for almost 2 decades doesn't sound like it was at ALL serious to them.

I hope they get FINED big time, I'm sick of America's corporations OBVIOUSLY despising American citizens.

"I don’t think they’re required to follow through once they’re gone... is that right?"

There really isn't anything the employer can do once the employee is gone.

You were saying ...

There really isn't anything the employer can do once the employee is gone.

And that sounds like a perfect line for an employer to use...

Employer talking to employee: "You know there really isn't anything we can do if you leave..."

And thus... "problem solved"... :-)

Ummmm..., I would say that right now, in light of this news, that Target is working diligently to become the most "illegal-alien-free workplace" in the United States... LOL...

And so, you might be ignoring the one place that has no illegal aliens working in that workplace... :-)

"Just saying"... now... that perhaps we should support the one company who is most likely going to have absolutely no illegal aliens in their workplace...

I don't LIKE Target, and if you think that I am IMPRESSED with Target for belatedly deciding to see if ONE of their stores has any illegals working for it there, you are sadly mistaken.

WHO hired the illegals?

WHO did annual reviews of these illegals?

How come Target is obviously so pathetic, that it took them SIXTEEN YEARS to discover fifty illegals in ONE store.

How about those other 1000++ Target Stores ---- how naive do you think I am, that I should PRESUME that they are illegal alien FREE????

Sorry, I may be really stupid, but I ain't quite THAT naive.

Okay, now that I know your basic reason, I see why you don't want to shop there... LOL...

And just to think, I thought it had something to do with illegal aliens... :-)

Target was complying with the law, unlike their illegal immigrant employees.

LOL!

>>> "Thanks for the ping!" <<<

You are very welcome!

You know, I have not heard one thing about Target and the Salvation Army this year, but since it's obvious that Target has pro-posters, it wouldn't surprise if they planned these stories to come out in the media during the CHRISTMAS SEASON when so many Christians notice that they do not permit the Salvation Army to have bell ringers at their doors.

Target is an "all American" store, hey??? LOLLOL

What part of the article is beyond your grasp here? They got 'no match' letters from the Feds and they followed all of the requisite procedures up to and including the separation of the employees.

Target complied with the law.

It’s slightly different than that. The employer must collect the I-9 from all employees. If the employee can’t produce the documents required, he can not be employed. Although it’s weaselly, it takes the burden off the employer as far as wrongful termination lawsuits. They can’t be sued for refusing to violate federal law.

I mean..., if I had a "bozo" filter, I would definitely put you on my "bozo list" -- but unfortunately I don't have a bozo list...

We've received many requests from freepers requesting that other freepers not post to them. There are several problems with this.

1. It's impossible for us to enforce.
2. We don't have the time to enforce these requests.
3. We don't have the software to keep track of these requests.
4. Thick skin helps.
5. Ignore the poster, if you don't reply, they won't reply.

Free Republic does not need a bozo filter, bozo filters are for wimps.

But, have no worry, by next week and another 500 posts of mine, I'll not even remember talking to you... LOL...

Hopefully you won't make any more comments that I see, so I won't post to you again....

[ it's just too bad I don't have that "bozo list"...]

Sure they did...Hey, and I bet after they hired dozens of low wage, non-English speaking employees, they were just in total shock to find all these people were here illegally.

Everyone at the corporate office said, "Shazzam" in unison!!

Then after pulling their applications, they found they were all but blank or filled out by someone else other then the applicant, and upon close inspection by Mr. Corrupt Hirecheap, found the state seal behind their photographs on the drivers licenses depicted Pancho Villa sitting on a jackass.

They can’t be sued for refusing to violate federal law.

That makes perfect sense to me, but it apparently doesn't make any sense to those who say that they are going to sue on the basis of what happened... :-)
