HOUSTON – The first openly gay person to be elected mayor of Houston says she hopes her victory in Saturday's election will change how the world views the city.
Houston is the nation's fourth-largest city and the biggest to elect an openly gay mayor.
Mayor-elect Annise Parker spoke Sunday at a press conference after defeating former city attorney Gene Locke with 53.6 percent of the vote in the hotly contested runoff election.

We do have evidence of Annise’s campaign paying so-called “conservatives” to do her bidding.
I would think if the election had been tilted one way or the other by the Katrina refugees that Mr.Locke would have been the winner.
If she pronounces it like the Greek name then it sounds like a niece.

Talk about choosing between the “lesser of two evils!” Better to write-in or not vote at all!
Oh, I am quite aware of that trend, and love to see the twisting and turning of their cognitive dissonance as they approach such matters.
And by no means is their thought coherent as they in the very same post attack those who would vote for a candidate due to their sexual orientation and then indicate that they would not support a gay candidate for public office.
As for Ms. Parker, she is not a Margaret Thatcher, but she is not a Rosie O'Donnell but rather a moderate Democrat, which is the best Houston can expect.
No, it simply shows that the people of Houston voted for the most fiscally responsible of the two candidates.
Annise has been the City Controller for six years and the last time I checked Houston was in better financial shape than any of the largest cities in the country.
While I do not live in Houston, I do own property there and those properties have continued to appreciate in value throughout the current economic depression.
BTW-How are the property values doing in your city?
What is the unemployment rate in your city?
How many Fortune 500 companies are based in your city?
And what is the sexual orientation of the person who controls your cities' finances?
Not all. This was an easy call for Conservatives in Houston and they voted for Parker.
