HOUSTON -- It was no great surprise when some religious leaders and conservative activists voiced fierce opposition to the mayoral candidacy of Annise Parker, a gay woman. But voters here have largely dismissed the issue as insignificant, even though she could become the first openly lesbian mayor of a major American city.
Ms. Parker, a city controller who has been elected to local office six times with little controversy over her sexual preference, is the leading candidate in Saturday's election runoff.
"This is about the best person for the job, period," said taxi driver Arthur Berry, 48 years old, who said he was leaning toward Ms. Parker. "I could care less if she is a lesbian. She has the right experience."
Still, Ms. Parker has faced some attacks from some who fear she will push a radical gay agenda. "We have a very aggressive campaign by homosexuals to assert philosophical control over city government, and the real victim here is the traditional family," said Dave Welch, executive director of the Houston Area Pastor Council, a group of 200 Christian church leaders.

Houston: The Democr@p cesspool of Texas. (Austin is donk, too, but it’s not a cesspool - yet.)
A pervert elected to anything in Texas, never thought I would see the day. Sad, sad, sad.

It is a cesspool. We have nothing but worthless candidates.
Parker is the better of the two.
What about Kathy Whitmire?
I doubt that...but we’ll see I guess.
lol.
Whether the mayor
is straight or gay,
You gotta know
you'll pay to play!
If the gays could only get a 500 vote lead in early voting, Parker is probably going down.
I disagree.
I love Houston. I left there about 25-30 years ago and still consider it my second home. It was a great city with a marvelous "can do" spirit that was palpable and most appealing.
It was the election of Whitmire which made me decide to leave. With her the handwriting was on the wall. Houstonians had shown they wanted their great city to become just another Leftist dump along the lines of the Liberal dominated cities of the NE. This latest election just confirms my opinion and I feel very sad for a city I love.
I am a native of the Houston area... You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about.
While Houston has a vocal Democrat party, it’s hardly a cesspool. Austin is in fact much worse. However, if our police could do their jobs, our city would be nicer - but it’s light years better than Austin; the liberal mecca of Texas.
I live in the villages.
Much of Houston looks like Mexico now.

The poll, commissioned by television station KHOU and radio station KUHF, is based on telephone interviews earlier this week with 442 registered voters in Houston. It has an error rate of plus or minus 4.7 percent.
