WALNUT CREEK More than 40 employees at the downtown Target store quit their jobs after an internal probe raised suspicions about their immigration status, according to lawyers who have met with the workers.
Managers summoned the overnight crew of the North Main Street department store to meetings last month and gave workers the chance to prove their eligibility to work in the United States by bringing in the proper documents, the lawyers and Target representatives say.
Most of the questioned workers voluntarily resigned, Target spokeswoman Kate Gillen said. The Minnesota-based retailer would not say how many workers left the Walnut Creek store, but advocates for the employees say it was dozens.
"Forty-five people are without a job," said lawyer Rocio Avila of La Raza Centro Legal, a San Francisco legal group pressing Target for more information. "Many of the workers there were long-term workers. There was one gentleman who had been (at Target) for 19 years, and the average was five to six years. These weren't temporary workers, seasonal workers for the holiday season. These were loyal workers who had been there for a long time."
Avila met with many of the workers and said the group, all of them Spanish speakers, are confused about what happened Nov. 11 and Nov. 12, when supervisors, paychecks in hand, held staff meetings at the beginning of the graveyard shift.

Anecdotal story. I have had to get i9 forms filled out for more than 20 years. 1992 I was told that I could be investigated by EOT commission for questioning the documentation from workers for i9 by a Idaho state employment office worker. I’m not a cop and don’t plan on being a Soviet style informant. The government could stop much of the employing of illegals but don’t. I just went through a class on the process that I have to go through if i9 information is challenged and counter challenged. It could take a year to get the process done. You know I don’t care anymore except to do only what I have to to comply. Sounds to me the workers got Bull Sheeted into resigning they could have challenged the finding making lots of work for every one.
My sentiments exactly.
For years we are told illegals only take jobs that americans don’t want to do. While that may be true for certain professions (slaughterhouses, cleaning, farmwork) it definitely isn’t true for retail. I would have loved to have a nice Target job when I was a teenager 25 years ago. And I’m sure there are plenty of unemployed who are desperate for any decent job now.
The managers who hired these illegals should be immediately terminated. Every place I’ve ever worked has required a copy of my US passport or birth cert.
Lo siento, amigos - vaya con dios (I’m sorry, friends - go with God)
Just for your info..
My teenage son is working at Best Buy for $10/hr.
So I guess there are some Americans who will take the jobs.
<I dont know of any country that will legally hire people that cant document their status (maybe there are some).
When the Mexicans were marching for amnesty with their Mexican flags (before they got hip and brought out the US flags), my Norwegian friend was surprised they weren’t arrested on the spot. Even in socialistic, take-in-a-lot-of-asylum-seekers Norway, they control on their immigrants. If you don’t belong there, you won’t be there long. The idea of undocumented people protesting in the street was amazing to her. It was a little amazing to me, too. Looked like a target-rich environment for ICE, but no such luck.
My thoughts exactly!!
How can a company who highers illegal aliens not know they are illegal within a short period of time? When completing the paperwork for employment a SS number is required. When payroll deductions are forwarded to he Treasury Dept with matching SS #’s to match up with the payments, why aren’t the “bad” numbers kicked out of the system?
There are literally MILLIONS of retired people who would dearly love to work part time for $10.00 hr. besides PT work costing the employers less in benefits the older folks bring with them the very best work ethics, far better then the lazy good for nothing whiners that seem to be everywhere today.
In the area that I’m in, Americans are doing those jobs.
Maybe they’ve been squeezed out or they have a different attitude about that kind of employment in other parts of the country but not where I am.
On top of that, take a look at this new study from the Center for Immigration studies about unemployment.

Unemployed Natives Available for Work
Report Finds Huge Number of Less-Educated Americans Not Working
WASHINGTON (December 10, 2009) The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) has released a new study detailing the U-6 unemployment rates among native born workers. U-6 is a broader measure of employment that includes the unemployed, people who would like to work but who have not looked for a job recently, and those involuntarily working part-time. A look at these numbers shows the situation is particularly bad for minorities, the young, and less-educated Americans. These are the workers who face the most competition from immigrants legal and illegal.
The study, A Huge Pool of Potential Workers: Unemployment, Underemployment, and Non-Work Among Native-Born Americans, is authored by CIS Director of Research Steven A. Camarota and Demographer Karen Jensenius.
Among the findings:
* As of the third quarter of 2009, there are 12.5 million unemployed native-born Americans, but the broader U-6 measure shows 21 million natives unemployed or underemployed.
* There are 6.1 million natives with a high school education or less who are unemployed. Using the U-6 measure, it is 10.4 million.
* In addition to those less-educated natives covered by U-6, there are another 18.7 million natives with a high school education or less not in the labor force, which means they are not looking for work.
* The total number of less-educated (high school education or less) natives who are unemployed, underemployed, or not in the labor force is 29.1 million.
* To place these numbers in perspective, there are an estimated seven to eight million illegal immigrants holding jobs.
* As of the third quarter of 2009, the overall unemployment rate for native-born Americans is 9.5 percent; the U-6 measure shows it as 15.9 percent.
* Nationally, the unemployment rate for natives with a high school degree or less is 13.1 percent. Their U-6 measure is 21.9 percent.
* State with the highest U-6 rates for less-educated natives are Michigan, California, Arizona, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Nevada, Illinois, and Georgia.
* The unemployment rate for natives nationally with less than a high school education is 20.5 percent. Their U-6 measure is 32.4 percent.
* Nationally, the unemployment rate for young native-born Americans (18-29) who have only a high school education is 19 percent. Their U-6 measure is 31.2 percent.
* Nationally, the unemployment rate for native-born blacks with less than a high school education is 28.8 percent. Their U-6 measure is 42.2 percent.
* The unemployment rate for young native-born blacks (18-29) with only a high school education is 27.1 percent. Their U-6 measure is 39.8 percent.
* Nationally, the unemployment rate for native-born Hispanics with less than a high school education is 23.2 percent. Their U-6 measure is 35.6 percent.
* The unemployment rate for young native-born Hispanics (18-29) with only a high school degree is 20.9 percent. Their U-6 measure is 33.9 percent.
* Nationally, the overall unemployment rate for immigrants (legal and illegal) is 9.9 percent. Their U-6 measure is 19.6 percent, which is significantly higher than the rate for natives.
* The unemployment rate for immigrants with less than a high school education is 12.3 percent. Their U-6 measure is 27.4 percent. The unemployment rate for young immigrants (18-29) with only a high school education is 12.2 percent. Their U-6 measure is 25.2 percent.

Thanks for this - I am forwarding to my local TV station which ran this story last night.
I already sent my feedback - typcially biased report interviewing the recently terminated illegal alien but no attempt to get the other side of the story from the citizens who will be applying for the job.
Many Americans don't qualify for welfare. These Americans will work.
The correct phrase is "couldn't care less", meaning that they don't care at all. "Could care less" is ambiguous and doesn't indicate what their current level of caring is (it might be very high), or whether they actually do care less, but only that there's a possibility of them caring less.
Sounds like you're an academic that received high marks in Stupidity 101. Try a class in the, "Basics of Ignorance I and II". I think you'll enjoy it.
Oh, and think about a course in, "Understanding the Obvious." It might benefit someone like you!
I don’t know about you,but I’m so damn sick and tired of hearing people speaking Spanish. They need to speak ENGLISH or they can get out. When my Great-grandfather came here from Germany he learned English and used it. He was a Lutheran pastor who baptized me and contributed something to this nation.
