WALNUT CREEK More than 40 employees at the downtown Target store quit their jobs after an internal probe raised suspicions about their immigration status, according to lawyers who have met with the workers.
Managers summoned the overnight crew of the North Main Street department store to meetings last month and gave workers the chance to prove their eligibility to work in the United States by bringing in the proper documents, the lawyers and Target representatives say.
Most of the questioned workers voluntarily resigned, Target spokeswoman Kate Gillen said. The Minnesota-based retailer would not say how many workers left the Walnut Creek store, but advocates for the employees say it was dozens.
"Forty-five people are without a job," said lawyer Rocio Avila of La Raza Centro Legal, a San Francisco legal group pressing Target for more information. "Many of the workers there were long-term workers. There was one gentleman who had been (at Target) for 19 years, and the average was five to six years. These weren't temporary workers, seasonal workers for the holiday season. These were loyal workers who had been there for a long time."
Avila met with many of the workers and said the group, all of them Spanish speakers, are confused about what happened Nov. 11 and Nov. 12, when supervisors, paychecks in hand, held staff meetings at the beginning of the graveyard shift.

I don’t know of any country that will ‘legally’ hire people that can’t document their status (maybe there are some).
Begin apology from the corporate headquarters in 5 ... 4 ...
Sorry the Americans are not giving up welfare to work..
Every time immigration reform is mentioned in the congress, there is the demand that businesses must do more to ensure that they are not employing illegals. Then when they do...
(sniff), (sniff).
I smell Ubama's Labor Secretary's filthy hand in this.
This may be the first step in Ubama's paying back the trial lawyers for their support.
I'm sure SEIU thugs and ACORNholes are involved somehow, too.
You better believe those jobs will be filed in short order. By Americans.
What you find in places like that is that after the first few illegals are hired, pretty soon that's all there is.
Note that they were all "Spanish speakers". That's because they pull their people in and shut out the Americans. Can't speak Spanish? Guess you can't work this shift. No one will talk to you or understand you. Plus which my cousin Manny needs a Yob.
So the whole crew ends up 100% illegals. The supervisors can't or won't do anything because they have to get the work done, and if they try to interfere they get pushed.
It's really disgusting to watch, and it's commonplace in the Bay Area. Rank discrimination, hate and intimidation against Americans, sponsored by companies who owe their existence to America.
Hope they all have a nice Christmas...in Mexico.
Good News! Forty job openings for Americans.
‘, all of them Spanish speakers,’
I thought you had to be able to speak English to become a citizen
Confused? There is no stinking confusion...I've seen and heard this BS way too many times. I am so sick of these liars.
Can I be honest here? From my experience, Spanish speakers and people from Mexico in particular seem to be some of the biggest liars walking the planet. Many of these people simply lie as part of their daily routine, it's just part of their culture.
You clearly have a clear understanding of what is going on, I could not make your comments any better.
However, spelling is Méjico.... just kidding.... :-)
Second, "Forty-five people are without a job," said lawyer Rocio Avila of La Raza Centro Legal, a San Francisco legal group pressing Target for more information.
What right does this lawyer, or La Raza for that matter, to demand any information whatsoever from a corporation such as Target? La Raza isn't a law enforcement agency, and anyway, it appears the only people who have broke the law are the illegals, not Target. Senorita Avila should be invited to pound sand. And a happy ending: 45 U.S. citizens actually have a chance at getting one of those now-vacant jobs.
You are right, that is how IT works.
And, the employer is obligated to get an I9 with the required information; if things don’t match, it is over: that is why these folks left, they knew thing would not ‘match.’
People go back ‘home’ all the time when the required information is asked for, so? is the law!
Going deeper into the camps, the supervisors are the only ones that are bilingual, which is needed because the greedy corrupt business owners have to communicate with their rank and file illegal slaves...Pull their applications if any of these people bothered to fill one out and it'll be 99 percent blank, and many times are filled out by someone other that the applicant...It's all a sham so the company owners can pocket bigger proftis faster.
The corrupt company owners could care less if the workers wife's are all down at the local emergency rooms choking off the local hospitals, with baby delivery/health care non-payments.
These company owners don't care about craftsmanship, workmanship, product pride, health, cleanliness and in many cases, could care less if their illegal slaves drink on the job....As long as they do the job and work for cheap...
It's disgusting and it's killing America.
Well said.
Good point. Read where latinos control all the kitchen jobs in Vegas.....from head chefs, on down. All with phony credentials.
This would be so easy to take down----b/c casinos are very tightly regulated.
That's racist! Hmmm, my brother-in-law is Mexican. Several years ago he lost his job at IBM. I told him to start looking for another job pronto, long before his unemployment ran out. He said he could find another job anywhere, anytime he wanted. Several years later, he's still unemployed. He's had a few temporary gigs, smalltime work. Turns out he lied to me about his skills and job at IBM. He said he was an IT worker, but turns out he was a maintenance worker. Lazy liar, he is.
Very true.
