McCain Urges Seniors to Abandon AARP

Sen. John McCain is urging senior citizens to cut up their AARP membership cards and mail the pieces back to the organization, claiming AARP has betrayed them.

Sen. John McCain is urging senior citizens to cut up their AARP membership cards and mail the pieces back to the organization, claiming AARP has betrayed them.

Citing AARP's past opposition to proposed cuts in Medicare, McCain expressed dismay Thursday that the senior group has suddenly changed its position to support $460 billion in cuts to the program proposed by Democrats to help pay for health care legislation.

"Shame on AARP," McCain, R-Ariz., said Thursday on the Senate floor. "Take your AARP card, cut it in half and send it back. They've betrayed you."

"If we're talking about Medicare cuts alone as a way of financing health reform, we would fight that with all of our strength," he added. "We've gone as far as we can down that road."

Democrats throughout Thursday's Senate debate used AARP's endorsement of their bill to blunt Republican charges that they are gutting Medicare. AARP rode to the rescue of Democrats on Wednesday, announcing its support for billions in Medicare cuts to help fund the legislation.

As Republicans pressed to restore the cuts, AARP said Democrats merely were recommending elimination of waste and inefficiency within the giant health care program for seniors.

"Most importantly, the legislation does not reduce any guaranteed Medicare benefits," A. Barry Rand, AARP's CEO, said in a letter to senators.

Republicans, led by McCain, 73, but not a member of the group, said seniors would lose some of their add-on benefits that are part of coverage under private insurance Medicare. "Above all, we must not use Medicare as a piggy bank" to pay for other programs, he said.

AARP has always been a big supporter of the left, and now the RADICAL LEFT. They are trying to "buy" as much of the "health care takeover" pie as they can by supporting it. This organization was built on the back of Medicare recipients and now they support the people who would just as soon let them die to pay for such noble causes as buying the votes of illegal aliens.

There’s a website out there that was encouraging seniors to do the same thing-and they’d get some sort of discount or something for joining. I think it was americanseniors.org or something like that. I’m sure that’s where McCain got his “cut up the card” idea.

How many of these “medicare recipients” vote for the politicians who have put them in this position?

Why is he saying this now, when people have been canceling AARP since July.

These politicians should keep up with the “real” news.

Yes, even the proverbial broken clock is right twice a day.
Well, at least he stood up and said it. More than can be said about fakes like Romney, et al.

My Mom, bless her, went to her grave considering the AARP to be a pathetic victims group. The most prosperous of Americans looking for handouts. Watching these pathetic old couples scrounging around for discounts and holding up lines while they dither with the clerk.

Yep,sure enough,I just checked out americanseniors.org and they mentioned McCain’s statement on their home page. Looks like it might be a good alternative to AARP,though.

This is a long standing tactic of the left. Take over an organization then shift its focus from supporting the very people they claim to represent to being another faction of the left.

The did it with NOW and now the AARP. I removed myself from them a while ago.

Look at climategate.. they’ve been caught again...

Have you considered how many "snowbird" voters there are in AZ? He knows who his constituents are if nothing else.

::::::::
Well, many AARP members are not eligible for medicare benefits. Those that are, usually BUY supplemental policies from outfits like AARP or other sources. Many do not realize that Medicare is not free — it never has been. You pay the taxes all your working life, then you pay premiums for both the basic Medicare and any supplemental you can afford. It is not cheap either, especically for seniors on fixed incomes.

So now envision taking that ability to not only recover some of your stolen taxes, but also to buy some reasonable coverage that is weak at best.

Obama and his Soylent Green goons do not give a damn because it is all about buying votes and empowerment. And that is why even guys like McCain know it and speak out.
