Steve McIntyre is a mild-mannered Toronto businessman who dabbles in statistics as a hobby. But to some climate scientists, he's Public Enemy No.1. They mention him often in their e-mails and try to make sure his criticisms of their work aren't published. They're really showing a siege mentality, he says.
Mr. McIntyre is a bit player in a scandal that has swept the world of climate science like a mighty hurricane. It features leading scientists who, to the conspiratorially minded, seem to be colluding to manipulate data, withhold information, delete records and stifle dissent. The worst scientific scandal of our generation, declared one opinion writer in the Telegraph. Not quite. But the so-called Climategate affair thousands of hacked e-mails made public on the eve of the Copenhagen convention gives a pile of ammunition to those who believe global warming is a giant boondoggle.
The damaging e-mails were hacked from the servers of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in England. Its temperature databases provide much of the case for global warming. Some of them appear pretty damning. One says, The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't. Another refers to a trick that can be used to hide the decline in temperature. One from Phil Jones, the centre's director, says, I will be e-mailing the journal to tell them I'm having nothing more to do with it until they rid themselves of this troublesome editor.
Even sympathizers concede the e-mails are a PR disaster. It isn't worth pretending that this isn't a major blow, wrote well-known British environmentalist George Monbiot, who's making an appearance this evening in Toronto.
Climategate brings a long-running and very bitter battle into the open...

I want Al Gore and the UN to reimburse me for every cent funnelled to this scam.
Then I want them punished for CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
"Mr. McIntyre, a semi-retired mining executive with a math background, claims he belongs to neither camp. I'm an anarchist, he says. If so, he sure knows how to lob bombs. He has sought to discredit the data underlying the famous hockey stick (the temperature graph that shows global temperatures suddenly spiking up after centuries of being flat) and has taken a run at tree-ring data. He even found a technical error that forced NASA to revise its claim that 1998 was the warmest year on record in the United States. (It was 1934.)"
So, McIntyre is in the pay of the "eeeeeviiilllle oil companies" despite being retired and having no connection with the oil biz?? And make no mistake about it, McIntyre didn't "try" to falsify the "hockey stick" methodology, he did so with flying colors, as attested to by the independent commission gathered to check it out.
“we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment “
Could the lack of sunspots have anything t do with it?
I'm going to give this it's own thread...
Pages on major news sites containing the word "climategate":
Thanks to Google or other search engines, you can easily see how a story is promoted/reported... or not.
The MSM can decide what is news, and they have unambiguously decided that Climategate is definitely not news - or rather, not news they wish to report.
This test searches a number of leading news sites for the term "climategate". This test is quite revealing, for on the left-wing sites where it appears - which are very few - it is either in an opinion column, where it is somewhat laughingly disparaged or in a blog comment that somehow escaped the notice of the censors. One might argue that they may use a different term for the fraud, which is, perhaps a fair observation... however, for that reason, the "Huffington Post", was included. "The Huffington Post" is a left-wing Liberal site/forum/blog where the term 'climategate' has been published THOUSANDS of times by left-wing bloggers - all of which makes it more conspicuously absent from thousands of stories published daily by the MSM. The Huffington Post left-wingers are using the term frequently and very freely amongst one-another - but you would never know that such a term even existed if you relied solely upon the MSM for your news and information.
See the chart above which shows actual numerical results according to Google site searches done earlier today (Dec. 4th, 2009).
Using Google, you can do a simple test to immediately expose such blatant press bias by searching each site individually for the term, and simply counting the number of results pages.
For example, to search CNN for the term "climategate" simply type the following into Google and see:
site:www.cnn.com climategate
Foreign Media
As you can see by the chart, non-US media seem less reluctant to touch this story as they do not have their Al Gore and Obama to protect.

Your urls are wrong for several sites:
MSNBC is site:www.msnbc.msn.com cru emails (you don't have the msn.com domain) 39 hits
ABC is site:abcnews.go.com cru emails (NO www and you don't have the go.com domain) 23 hits
I stopped checking your work at that point, but you get the idea. (OOH! That's how peer review is supposed to work!)
Try your search again and you'll find slightly better results. Just because the MSM hasn't embraced the moniker "climategate" doesn't mean that they're not giving at least lip service to the issue.

And yes, it is a swindle- a fraud and a cheat and a scam-- a deliberately designed construct intended to con you out of things you hold dear-- money, prosperity, freedom... and a few other things, as well.
But the so-called Climategate affair thousands of hacked e-mails made public on the eve of the Copenhagen convention gives a pile of ammunition to those who believe global warming is a giant boondoggle.
The writer obviously hasn't bothered to even look at the files in question, before smearing McIntyre.
There are just over a thousand e-mails (1,076), but almost 3,500 (3,487) files in a "documents" folder that includes such interesting files as "HARRY_READ_ME.txt," in which a beleagured programmer tries, with little success, to squeeze sense out of CRU data.
Margaret Wente's bias is obvious, and it's the same attitude that led to this fiasco: belief trumps facts.
