Suozzi Concedes Defeat in Nassau Executive Race (Republicans take over Nassau County)

MINEOLA, N.Y. — Thomas R. Suozzi conceded defeat on Tuesday in the race for the Nassau County executive, a harsh setback for Mr. Suozzi, the Democratic incumbent who was widely regarded as a potential candidate for higher office.

He acknowledged his loss after a recount of the votes cast last month showed that his Republican challenger, Edward P. Mangano, a county legislator, had a 386-vote lead. Mr. Suozzi, speaking to reporters at a news conference, said he believed it was “mathematically impossible to win. I didn’t think it was fair to the public, my team or Mr. Mangano, and I didn’t think it was realistic.” Mr. Mangano was unfamiliar to many voters before he entered the race, and his victory represents a stinging rebuke of Mr. Suozzi, who at the start of the campaign was considered a fairly safe bet to win a third term.

Mr. Suozzi himself seemed surprise by the results. “Nobody saw this coming, and if anyone told you they could predict this outcome they’re lying,” he said.

He attributed his loss to voters’ anger over consistently high property taxes, an issue that resonated in other races in the region where incumbents lost. “People are angry about property taxes, and they held the county executive accountable,” Mr. Suozzi said.

“I didn’t think it was mathematically possible to win” = didn’t see anyway to manufacture/find any more votes to steal the election!

Suozzi is no dope.

When you are a well-known long-term incumbent and you lose to an unknown, underfunded opponent like this, it's best to reading the handwriting on the wall and make yourself scarce.

The Nassau race has reached its conclusion. The GOP takes over one of the wealthiest and most populous counties in the country.

Suozzi was a rising star so this is a very good win. How typically Democrat is Suozzi? He actually said he is disappointed that he won’t be able to continue HIS work to cut property taxes! This bum is the one who raised the taxes and his Republican replacement ran on that point.

Here are a couple of reasons how Suozzi is a typical Democrat —

1) Property taxes went up 42% in 6 years on his watch.
2) He passed a 2.5% energy tax in June 2009, that is added to all utility bills.

My sister and her husband pay over $21,000 (yep 21 thousand dollars a year on their property taxes. They are glad to see him go!

$19,000 a year isn’t chump change either. I know the schools out there are good but all those taxes!

The schools are good, still not worth the money because you most of it is school taxes and you pay them even when your kids are out of school.
