The storm mucking up Southcentral Alaska this week battered a far-flung U.S. Coast Guard outpost in the Aleutians over the weekend with hurricane-force winds, according to the National Weather Service.
Out in Attu, the crew of the Coast Guard's Long-Range Navigation Station reported sustained winds of 125 mph with gusts hitting 178 mph over the weekend. The station also got more than a foot and a half of snow.
The gusts, equivalent to the winds of a Category 5 hurricane, damaged a communications antenna, which broke free from three securing mounts, the Coast Guard said.
The station's crew has been making repairs and has spent more than 100 hours on snow removal.
There are 20 active-duty personnel based at the station on year-long assignments.

Reminds me of a story I heard awhile back. A large AF transport type aircraft, having delivered personnel and goods to Thule, Greenland is being serviced for the return trip stateside. The airman responsible for cleaning the head holding tank is a little late and the pilot, a major, is getting impatient. The airman finally shows up and the major reams his butt & finishes off by threatening to see the airmans next assignment really sucks. The airman responds, "With all due respect sir, it's minus thirty degrees outside, it's dark for the next two months, I'm cleaning crap out of aircraft in Thule, Greenland ... where would that be?"
Hell, send the ACLU with them.

I have a buddy who spent three years at Diego and loved it.
Of course, he's more the 'loner' type, anyway. I figure that 3000 miles from anything (really, look it up) is right up his alley.
I would think that after about an hour, everyone is white. As in frozen ice.
And I bet in the summer the bugs are horrible. There are just some places that humans were not supposed to live.
I am sure women are stationed there. Not sure if I would want my daughter there, but that’s the deal when you sign up.
Wind-surfing's gonna seem awfully tame to those guys when they get back to the Lower 48.
My wife was USCG stationed at Tillamook OR, and has some serious stories about the weather there. Can’t imagine how bad it can get up there.

LOL... I never did it, but I know a couple of guys that did. They actually enjoyed it, and there's some other benefits: You put in your year, but then you get first pick of your next duty station. Plus they get "isolated duty pay"-- with nowhere to spend it-- so you come out of your year there with a nice pile of cash too. It's not so bad after all.
