YORK, Pa. -- Salvation Army bell ringers in York have collected the first gold coin of this year's kettle campaign.

"As soon as the staff person saw it in the kettle, they called me and called George. They were so excited. They wanted us to come down and see it," Major Lurlene Mudge, of York’s Salvation Army.

They received a lot of gold jewelry last year.
Makes a person feel good about humanity and we need that these days.
The Krugerrand is a one ounce coin. It ought be worth closer to 1500 at todays prices.
This is they way we're supposed to 'tith'...to make sure the poor, hungry, "children and widows" are helped.

No, you shouldn’t keep gold coins, jewelry, or even cash in safety deposit boxes. Do a google search. There is some consensus that the gubmint at some point might order the banks to only allow certain things to be taken out of safe deposit boxes.
Basically they are only safe for keeping papers in, nothing more. Whaddya gonna do if there is a run on banks and the gubmint closes all banks? You won’t be able to get to any of your valuables when you might want them the most, even if they would let you take your stuff out.
Safe deposit boxes put you at the mercy of the gubmint. Caveat Emptor.
Maybe we should calculate the average of the three figures given.
That should at least give us a good ball park number.

yeah, what i said ... IMHO ... safe dep boxes are worthless.
You remember that not long ago, Treas Sec Paulson got all the CEO’s of the major banks in a room, and even the solvent banks were made to sign papers that they did not want to sign, and to take bail out funds that they did not want. So do you not realize from that, that if the all-mighty gubmint tells the banks to freeze safe deposit boxes and look for ... cash ... gold ... or ??? that they will do the gubmint’s bidding? Of course they will. They could start axing people to prove where the cash came from. The gubmint could declare it illegal for private citizens to own gold and that they must sell it back to the government for x$ per ounce (below market) ... oh, that’s right, they did that in 1933. There are many possible scenarios. Be imaginative.

Grandpa did care for the Red Cross - none of vets have a good word for the IRC at all.
To be fair - they are chartered by CONgress and do provide verification of death in the family so service folks can get home forthe funeral sort of thing, and the RD will lend the money for a ticket IF you cannot get it elsewhere.
But that is about the only positive thing I will say about em.
