I just remember the stories from World War II vets about free coffee and donuts at the front, while the Red Cross stayed in the rear and charged money for them. My dad (Korean War) holds a grudge for the same reasons.

Grandpa did care for the Red Cross - none of vets have a good word for the IRC at all.
To be fair - they are chartered by CONgress and do provide verification of death in the family so service folks can get home forthe funeral sort of thing, and the RD will lend the money for a ticket IF you cannot get it elsewhere.
But that is about the only positive thing I will say about em.
