I'd like to feel the sincerity here, but given his record on clemency while he was Governor of Arkansas, I see this as no more than a swan-song for a has-been politician.

Hate it.

I don’t see where he is really taking any responsiblity for his own actions in this.

“In 1989, Clemmons, then 17, was convicted in Little Rock for aggravated robbery. He was paroled in 2000 after then-Gov. Mike Huckabee commuted Clemmons’ 95-year prison sentence. Huckabee, who was criticized during his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 for the number of clemencies and commutations he granted, cited Clemmons’ age at the time of the sentence.”

...nuff said...

It does appear from his statement that Huckabee is trying to distant himself from any responsibility in the long line of persons letting this man out on the streets......sigh!

If the Huckster runs in 2012, all his opponent has to do is air some simple commercials focusing on gravemarkers in cemetaries which would not have been there but for Huckabee’s naive softness with criminals. If this atrocity turns out to have been committed by a Huckabee parolee, the number of gravemarkers will be at least five. And we’ve still got almost three years.

I think Huck has just had his Willie Horton moment.

He can’t even admit to making the decision to grant clemency, in fact he’s lying by omission when he claims the parole board released him.

Huckabee decided to grand clemency because he felt a 95 year sentence was too much and at 17, this animal had a chance for rehabiliation.

That the judge and prosecutor was against the release obviously didn’t sway Huckabee’s opinion. The parole board was forced to vote on parole, triggered by Huckabee’s clemency request. While they hold some blame for approving the request, Huckabee got the entire ball rolling.

That he refuses to admit to his part shows how little ethics means to Huckabee.

HUCKABEE, get out of my face. I never liked you. This only confirms I was right all along.

Screw you Huckster. You commuted his 60+ year sentence and allowed him to be paroled...
That is precisely why he was let out of prison and gave him the opportunity to become a pedophile and sex offender and now the likely murderer of FOUR POLICE OFFICERS!

He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990, making him parole eligible and was “paroled by the parole board” once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but “prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him”.

When a person is sentenced to jail, it is such a joke. WHen nobody is watching, the govt quietly lets the evil people back into society.

We check the sex offender registry in my household often. It is beyond frightening to see how many live within 1 mile of elementary schools.

If you have not checked into your local area, do so. It is a public access thing, so there is no cost or complication. Our site posts pictures, and man oh man are they creepy.

My wife says she’s seen a level 3 in our neighborhood routinely, walking a little fluffy dog... We suspect that is bait.

I am just not seeing the sentiment that belongs in there:

“If this murderer has committed this heinous crime of killing 4 brave police officers today, then I stand responsible, among others, and my entire being is filled with bitter regret for what I have done. I pray the families will one day find it in their hearts to somehow forgive me for his tragic mistake.”

There's absolutely no admittance of any involvement but instead, shifting responsibility. MH knows he's in for a thrashing and is doing a tap dance to try to prevent it.

"People, settle down. My political career is only beginning. I'm not actually soft on crime. I just (sob) believe in FORGIVENESS. Everyone (sniff) deserves a second chance! Plus, no one knows whether this gentleman committed this horrific crime. And if we don't find him (David, not NOW, I'm giving a press conference! What? Oh, keep him in the shed out back --whoops! I mean keep IT in the shed out back!), now where were we? Since we may never, ever know if this man is innocent, it behooves everyone to forget about what happened in Arkansas years ago, and focus on other things. My new book, for instance..."

If the cop-killer turns out to be one of Huckabee’s parolees, he’s presidential dead meat. And I think he knows it.

No Republican could argue that the Willie Horton issue was fair to attack Dukakis with and yet, for Huckabee, it’s somehow different. That’s not going to fly.
