Congress is debating legislation that would do essentially what Mitt Romney did in Massachusetts: impose a health insurance mandate, create a network of subsidies, and micro-manage health insurance policies. Before legislators take us down the same road, they should consider the Massachusetts experience. Citizens there are not impressed with RomneyCare.

PROOF RomneyCARE is a Disaster (and Romney is utterly clueless)
Small businesses bridle at health insurance hikes (Romneycare strangles Mass. businesses)
Bob Carroll, owner of a Billerica distributor of paint spraying equipment, recently got
some really bad news from Blue Cross-Blue Shield: His companys health insurance rates are going up 47 percent in January.

But in a joint opinion piece called "Govt.-Run Health Care Isn't the Answer," published
in the online version of The Advocate, a leading homosexual magazine, Sen. Tom
Coburn, R-Okla., and GOProud's Christopher R. Barron warned the homosexual
community that the Ryan White CARE Act has already demonstrated how government-
run health care has introduced rationing and waiting lists and cost the lives of the people under its provisions.

Massachusetts requires every resident to have health insurance, and this
year, without informing us directly, the state had changed the rules in a way that made

neither need nor wantor enrolled in a government-sponsored insurance planwe
would have to pay $1,000 each year to the state.

They're trying to manage the huge costs of the subsidized middle-class insurance program that is gradually swallowing the state budget.

Health care in Massachusetts: a warning for America [Romney brings Mass. to its knees]
The Bay State's mandatory insurance law is raising costs, limiting access, and lowering care.
Three years ago, Massachusetts adopted a plan requiring all residents to purchase health
insurance, with state subsidies for lower-income residents. But rather than creating a
utopia of high-quality affordable healthcare, the result has been the exact opposite
skyrocketing costs, worsened access, and lower quality care."

Mr. Romney should have known better before signing on to this not-so-grand experiment, especially since the state's "free market" reforms that he boasts about have proven to be irrelevant when not fictional.
Only 21,000 people have used the "connector" that was supposed to link individuals to private insurers."

CATO: OBAMACARE PRICE TAG IS 6 TRILLIONS
When we correct for both gimmicks, counting both on- and off-budget costs over the first 10 years of implementation, the total cost of ObamaCare reaches Im so sorry about this $6.25 trillion.
The former CBO director, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, warns today on the effect ObamaCare
will have on our economy and health care.
This bill will lead to a huge middle class tax increase:
The bill creates a new health entitlement program that the Congressional Budget Office
(CBO) estimates will grow over the longer term at a rate of 8% annually, which is much
faster than the growth rate of the economy or tax revenues.
When Barack Obama ran for president, he promised that his health care plan would
"lower health-care costs by $2,500 for the typical family." Now, it turns out that new
legislation that he supports creating public-private "co-operatives" will increase the costs
of family health insurance by $4,000 by 2019.

Sure. Put plainly and simply, it sucks!
Young people, have an additional expense every month of 300. to 400. that they cannot afford, for a “service” they cannot use. Most of them are healthy adults who generally do not need a doctors care, so if they do, it is a check-up, or to get an antibiotic or something equally as minute. With deductibles of 2500. a year, the “service” is of no use to them, but they still must pay the monthly fee, if they don’t they are fined, or signed up for masscare, which is medicaid. They end up staying home much much longer because they cannot afford cars and car insurance on top of it when they are just starting out. Same delema meets families but with higher premiums.
That is only ONE example. The waits for a doctors appt is up to 6 and 8 months right now, and will get worse. They have now instituted “group appts”, so if a doctor has 10 patients coming in for the same symptoms, they see a nurse practitioner as a group. AND, premiums are way up across the board for any medical insurance. There is more but off the top of my head, those are a few bad things about it.

The article doesnt make the plan look awful, like I thought it would. Any Freepers from that fine state that can give us more information? There are other opinions out there. I guess it depends on one's motivation and on which facts are highlighted or ignored
You have to admit that what they ended up with was much better than the public option route the liberal state legislature would have imposed on MA had Romney not worked out a compromise with the help of the conservative Heritage Foundation. Don't think the Heritage Foundation and the gov set out together to implement some socialist takeover of the system. Their goal was to avoid it.
Critics ignore the fact that the fundamental problem is not the costs of Commonwealth Care but rather the unprecedented collapse of state tax revenues.

From the comment section:
Direct control of medical practice in the states is obviously beyond the power of Congress. --Linder v. United States, 1925. http://supreme.justia.com/us/268/5/case.html
So critiques of Romneycare aside, Romneycare is perfectly legal under the Constitution while Obamacare isn't.
To: Mark
Yeah, y'all don't want the MA health care mess. You can ONLY buy a plan that is approved by the legislature, and they have larded up the requirements on even the basic plans, so that they're well over $15K. Hubby had left his job, so we didn't have a group plan anymore, so we had to buy individual insurance. The first year, we had a basic plan that was $9K, and we were satisfied with that, because we also had an HSA to pay co-pays, and meds out of pocket. Unfortunately that only lasted one year, until the Legislature realized that in order to cover everyone, we'd have to be made to buy Prescription Drug Coverage, too, to the tune of an additional $4K a year! We neither wanted it, nor needed it, but the only other choice is to do without insurance and pay the fine.
What we'd love to have is a Catastrophic Insurance policy that pays for Hospital Stays, and bills that together go over $25,000 in a year. And that allows for an HSA of around $10K a year from which we could pay in full for regular doctor visits, regular screenings like a Mammogram, Pap Smear, & colonoscopy, and for our meds. There's no reason to have insurance to do that regular maintenance, we just want something to cover us in the event of an illness that costs us more than we can handle from regular funds. If we had the ability to buy insurance outside the state, we could probably find one like that.
If Obamacare passes, we're ALL screwed, because there won't be anywhere else to go.
