WINDERMERE, Fla. -- Golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured when he hit a fire hydrant and then a tree outside of his Isleworth home early on Friday morning, officials said.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Woods was seriously injured and taken to Health Central Hospital. The Orange County Fire Department confirmed that a patient was taken to Health Central, but would not confirm that the patient was Woods.
Woods was driving a 2009 black Escalade, FHP said. He hit a fire hydrant outside of his home and a tree outside his neighbor's home.
FHP said the crash is still under investigation.
Update: Authorities: Tiger Woods hurt in Fla. car crash
How can you be seriously injured backing out of a driveway and hitting something from behind?
A Health Central hospital employee said at 2:30 p.m. that Woods was not a patient. A hospital operator would not say if Woods had been treated and released. These sketchy details seem very odd.FHP said the airbags in Woods' Cadillac Escalade did not deploy, which means the vehicle was traveling under 33 mph.
Orange County Fire Rescue received the call for aid at 2:28 a.m. Woods was transported from his Windermere-area neighborhood by the hospital's own ambulance.
FHP did not report the accident until just after 2 p.m. today. The agency said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
"Serious condition" but under 33 mph?
I don’t think they deploy if you’re rear ended.

Somebody was drunk. Bank it.
Especially in an Escalade.
yeah that does sound odd. It sounds like a fender bender, how do you get seriously injured going 33 miles per hour, especially in a big car like an Escalade

You're thinking like a "peon"... LOL...
People of his stature have driveways that you can drive forward out of and can get up some pretty good speed, too... :-)
Charges? Reckless driving?
Tiger is rich and famous enough to get away with something (like driving under the influence), but you never know. If that cop in Malibu didn't leak the details of Mel Gibson's arrest, he would have simply been charged with a lesser crime, and would have not received the devastating media publicity when the dirt leaked out about his behavior.
Since Tiger has had major surgery in the last year, we cannot rule out the fact that he is taking prescription drugs. I wonder if the cops will do full blood work?
Woods is not a bad guy. He refuses to let the black racists use him, and he seems to conduct his life with dignity. I wish him the best.
Leaving his home at 2:30am on Thanksgiving night soon after the stories started to get out about his alleged affair with Rachel Uchitel?
I was quoting off the web site. However, the Escalade has both side and curtain airbags, so there are a lot more angles that should have deployed something if he was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Kind of scary to end up in the hospital backing out of your driveway.
You got a point there. :-)
Prayers for his speedy recovery.
“Charges are pending” indicates the involvement of drugs or alcohol or somebody tampering with the vehicle.
If he was intoxicated and not wearing a seatbelt, he could have given himself a nice face buster and concussion on the steering wheel, especially since the air bag did not diploy.
Phreak physics?
That’s not true. Even at a low speed hitting something like a large tree can be fatal if it hits the wrong spot. Like right behind the firewall for example of moving sideways.
beats me. I could fall out of this chair and kink something just right and be paralyzed.
Great point. Never thought of that.
I’m wondering if his vehicle might have been propelled or flipped by the force of the hydrant’s water pressure. That would be equal to an IED, I would think. It wouldn’t matter what type of vehicle you’re in at that point.
