WASHINGTON Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.
The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.
The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.
In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

Agree. I took action weeks ago by cancelling cable tv - yes do it. The $50 a month will go towards the 2010 elections for donations to conservatives.
Too many idiots watch college ball games between University of Rapist Players Tech and Old U. Turn it off. Cancel the TV. Get tough because things are going to get tougher.
I was trying to get people to call and fax but most were clueless.
That is freakin’ priceless!
They will all be in Barbados doing “research” over the holidays. You won’t see them. Besides, it will be passed, signed into law, and the new taxes imposed by then.

You're lucky. With ObamaCare in place you'd be feeling dead!
Had a chance to talk with an old friend this evening, he works in DSS locally. He was complaining that with the state cutting back its share of money for programs and more and more people coming in for relief, he felt it was unfair that he had to work harder with less resources.
I took this opportunity to enlighten him to the fact that as more and more people seek hand outs from the government, less and less people are paying into the government.
“Historic only in the sense of its advancement of socialism.”
History is not generally pleasant to live through.
Huck You Farry Reid
Scott in VA - get tough. You are in a state that just had an election where the Repub gov nominee kicked major a*s thanks to efforts of the fine people of VA. The same thing happened in NJ.
Sadly this effort was muted by the treason of Dede and Newt stinking Gingrich. Newt in NY-23 screwed us in the House and to some extent in the Senate. Keep fighting.
Doctors are not going to take this sh*t and they better get more politically active including some $$ in donations or they will be serfs working for an ACORN boss.
If a million conservatives cancelled cable TV and used the savings for 2010 donations - we would have a war chest of $500 million. The threat would also shake up the liberal TV newsmedia.
Snowe and Collins? Weren’t they in bambi’s pocket before?
Isn't that what the Romans said as they watched the Visigoths swarm over the hill?
The one advanced by the Bush administration? With supporters McCain, Kennedy, and assorted others? You're right, that had no trouble at all getting to the floor.
That will be next. I already have health issues & know 0’s plan isn’t for me. He will let people like me die. So FUBO & your health care plan!
“...get ready top fight like HELL for the next three to four weeks!”
Let’s hope Americans rise to the call.
I fear they don’t fully understand what’s at stake.
This is one of the biggest game-changers in American history.
If it passes all of our lives will be much, much different than they have been.
At that point, we will all be property of the state. And I indeed do mean it literally.
Bite me.
Joe voted to BEGIN debate not FOR the bill...once again, folks—it ain’t over yet.
Pardon me for missing this, but who didn’t Vote? It had to be a Republican, but who was it?
Hopefully.....first order of business in 2011 after congress is flushed in 2010 is to reverse this BS with a two thirds majority and shove it up Obamas ass !
Government can’t run FEMA, the US Postal Service, the IRS etc and they want us to accept this BS !
BOHICA !
I heard Voinivich.
I see that you object to being called out on your cowardice. Roll up in a fetal position and succumb to tyranny if you like, but do it by yourself. Leave the rest of us out of it.
