New cervical cancer screening guidelines: report (Start at 21, every 3 years)
AFP ^ | 11/20/2009

Days after controversy erupted over new breast cancer screening guidelines, a US health group has said women should wait longer to get their first cervical cancer test.

The New York Times reported Friday that the American College of Obstetricians is now advising women to wait until age 21 to get their first Pap smear.

The advice is intended to cut down on unnecessary testing and reduce the risk of harmful invasive procedures to remove non-cancerous lesions that may show up on tests but often disappear if left alone, the group said.

The new recommendations overturn previous guidance, which suggested women should be tested yearly starting within three years of their first sexual intercourse.

In addition to waiting longer for a first test, the group said women over 30 with three consecutive normal test results can wait for three years before their next Pap.

The advice is likely to stir fierce debate as it comes shortly after controversial new guidelines for breast cancer screening that said women should get fewer mammograms.

If these kind of recommendations came out during a Republican administration, there would be screams of misogynist!

You would hope the public is smart enough to recognize the warning signs... not of cervical cancer, but the cancer of government run health care.

Sebellius has totally lost control, or all these findings would NOT be announced until after the passage of Obamacare.

I think she is incompetent as well as evil.

Thank God the incompetence is showing before the bill is passed.

My daughter got her first papsmear at 18 and had a bad reading. Although she was not sexually active, she had some other hormonal problems and we wanted to see how her hormones were affecting other systems. A lot. Even now, six years later, she gets tested every six months, down from every four months recently. You might guess what I think about this recommendation.

Its all about rationing heath care. This is just the beginning. Whats recommended to day will be requirements tomorrow. It will be written into law that you can get certain procedures only when the government says you can. Welcome to national health insurance.

Do you think the companies providing insurance coverage to women employed by congress and female federal workers will write this into their policies? That’s joke son.

Makes sense to me...fewer checkups, later in life and further between.

No rationing at all.

New battle cry:

"The Dems are trying to kill your mother, wife, and daughter."

We know they are trying to kill grandma, so I left her out.

Already out there. All of the hoo-rah over mammograms drowned it out.

If I remember right, they're now saying "After 50, and once every 3 years".

Dumb. It's hard enough to get men to go to the doc, giving them another excuse just adds to it. And, I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to this....I'm not looking forward to turning 40, or 50, or whatever.

I agree that unnecessary surgery is a problem, but you hardly need to suspend screening to deal with it.

Just screen and dont do unnecessary surgery!

They think calling for MORE Cervical exams
will offset out outrage to LESS Mammograms?

Sheesh! Classic educated dumb people.
