The plastics industry trade show on Tuesday said it is moving to Orlando, Fla., for 2012 and 2015 after nearly four decades in Chicago. The announcement follows a decision by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society last week to move its 2012 annual meeting to Las Vegas. Both shows cited the high cost of doing business in Chicago.
The plastic show's decision to leave is "a very serious loss," Mayor Richard Daley said, calling on unions and others working at the convention center to change fee structures and onerous work rules so Chicago can better compete for major shows.

He raises taxes, you fire an employee. He sends a bill to mandate insurance, you send your trade show to Florida. That’s the Chicago way. That’s how you bankrupt a state.
Because they have to pay SEIU wages, overtime, retirement benefits for union members and their families and friends, buy houses for the union bosses, etc.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of thugs.
Cause and effect, Richie m’boy. Cause and effect.
Cities like Chicago and NY are their own worst enemies. They cave to big labor and wonder why no one wants to play? It would seem that not only is liberalism a disease but one of its symptoms is rampant economic stupidity.
They killed the goose.
Atlas Shrugged
chicago.....home to ironworkers local #1.....you will get no concessions or fee reductions or work rule changes out of that bunch..
I’ve done shows there as an Exhibitor when we had to. It is amazingly stupid. We could not even plug in our own computers or setup our own booth.
Good to see that we in the industry won't have to save up enough every three years to be able to attend.
Unions thugs and convention center trade shows.
You can’t set up your displays yourself and the union will do it from 8-5 when/if they get around to it.
Can’t even plug in a power cord without a union guy doing it at Chicago conventions...reap what you sow.
Me too. We used to exhibit at an annual show at McCormick.
Not any more. Cost way to high and restrictions too severe for what the show is worth.
Excuse me! If you don’t bribe them you will never get set up!
Nobody holds shows in NYC and it's not hard to figure Chi Town will be off the list in the future.
Chicago and its’ union thugs priced themselves right out of the show business at McCormick Center. They have jacked prices there for too many years, work rules you won’t find anywhere else except New York City, made transportation impossible, hotel rates expensive, etc., etc., etc.
Is it any wonder the paying public is telling them to take their convention centers and shove it up to where the sun don’t shine? Hello Orlando and Tampa and Atlanta and Jacksonville, Nashville, and Birmingham. These cities have done it right while Chicago continues to suck! Bye-bye Chi town....
Same reason a lot of trade shows are no longer in New York City, plus the fact that then city councilperson Elizabeth Holtzman pushed a major increase in the hotel tax rate. Probably the same environment in Philadelphia. So now the annual trade show for Instrument Society of America has for years been in Houston TX. Better business environment, plus a lot of ISA members in Texas.
Went to the car show at McCormick place. Had to walk about three-quarters of a mile from my parking space to the hall in wind-whipped, 0 degree weather. I can understand why the plastics show moved to Orlando.
Likely.
Florida - Right to work state. Businesses that want to survive will be paying attention and look to states with the greatest economic freedom.
