Council to Consider Bicycle Registration
KYW 1060 ^ | Wednesday, 18 November 2009 | Mike Dunn

The ongoing jockeying among cars, bicycles and pedestrians in Philadelphia took a tragic twist in recent weeks with the deaths of two pedestrians who were struck by bicycles. Now, city council may look at requiring the registration of bikes so cyclists who cause accidents can be tracked down.

City councilman Frank DiCicco says countless pedestrians are struck by bicyclists and rarely does the cyclist stop: "When someone's struck by a bicycle, all you know is its someone on a bike, and the bicyclist takes off."

His colleague Jim Kenney says the deaths of the two pedestrians highlight the need to restore some order:

"There are elements that refuse to follow the rules, refuse to stay in the bike lane, swerve in and out of traffic during rush hour."

Look at all the bicycles in a city of 1+ million, multiply by $25 registration fee, and it’s obvious where the proteges of Eddie Rendell are going with this one....

Wow, must really be hauling to kill someone, and you’d think the cyclist would hit the road hard.

As in the case of guns, how does registration help? Other than putting money into state coffers and placing burdens on the non-criminal bike owners. Is the dying pedestrian supposed to read the registration number, and utter it to bystanders as his last words?

I don’t see a problem with this. Motorcycles pay a license fee to use the roads, and are required to buy insurance. My 150cc scooter is safety inspected, licensed and insured.

Why not bicycles? They have free use of bike paths, that no one other than joggers can use; so if you want to ride on them, no need for a license. But, if you want to demand the right to ride on the roads - then license up like everyone else.

Won’t be long until there are mandatory semi-annual safety inspection requirementsd also (at state approved inspection stations)!

I could not agree more. If you want to “share the road” share the cost.

Why not bicycles?

For that matter, why not pedestrians who may choose to walk on the roads?

Strollers too!

You want to use the roads ... then register, license and insure ... just like a car, truck or motorcycle.

The emissions test could hurt, however!

Now, they're even going to steal the kids allowance. "That bike's gonna cost you, kid."

How many people can remember a car license plate?

From the ‘60s bikes had registration numbers etched into them and there were also little license plates available (most said Sally or Bob or Yosemite Park) to help in recovery after theft.

Didn’t work to well either, it’s ‘feel’ good legislation and a revenue enhancer (bet the cops will love it too - “it was a Shrin with a ‘Obama 00’ vanity plate”)

So joggers will no doubt be next? After all, can't have folks not paying tribute to the government right? And you call yourself a conservative?
