WASHINGTON (CNN) Fewer than three in 10 Americans think Sarah Palin's qualified to be president, according to a new national poll - the least of any of the five potential candidates included in the survey.
But another woman tops that list in the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday: two-thirds of the public thinks that Secretary of State HIllary Clinton's qualified for the Oval Office. That's more than Vice President Joe Biden, who's currently next in line for the presidency.
According to the poll, 28 percent of Americans say Palin is qualified to run the White House, with seven in 10 saying the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee is not qualified.
The survey indicates that a majority of Republicans, 54 percent, feel Palin is qualified, with 44 percent indicating she isn't. But only 29 percent of independent voters questioned feel she is qualified to serve as president, with 68 percent disagreeing. According to the poll, nine in 10 Democrats feel Palin is not qualified.
The poll's release comes one day before the release of Palin's book, "Going Rogue: An American Life."

The public doesn't really know her yet. Obama was not really on anyone's radar screen in 2005 to be President. He even said himself that he was not ready. Right now Palin is running third among Reps behind Huckabee and Romney. The Democrats have been engaging in non-stop attacks against her and her family along with the MSM, Letterman, Maher, etc.
N.B.: This housewife was able to become mayor of a town for six years, defeat the incumbent governor in the GOP primary and beat the former Democrat governor to become the first female governor of Alaska and the youngest person ever elected governor of that state. She also had huge popularity ratings. Let's see what happens if/when she decides to run for another elective office and then take the polls.
She was elected governor, and she quit. Her stated reason for quitting as governor was essentially that people were picking on her. But if you say she quit because she could get more money elsewhere ... well, then, that's not the sort of person I want as president, either.
Come on, you can do better than that. She didn't quit because she could get more money elsewhere. She couldn't afford the legal bills that amounted to more than $500,000 that were bleeding her dry. And there was no end to the harrassment. Spending one more year under such circumstances wasn't worth it. P>Palin gave a speech offering reasons for her departure. She argued that both she and the state have been expending an "insane" amount of time and money to address "frivolous" ethics complaints filed against her. She also said that her decision not to seek reelection would make her a lame duck governor. A Palin aide was quoted as saying Palin was "no longer able to do the job she had been elected to do. Essentially, the taxpayers were paying for Sarah to go to work every day and defend herself." Buy her book and get her side of the issue.

Now, I'm sure that nobody would pick on her if she was president..... but if they did, how do you think Sarah Palin would respond to it? I could point to past precedent. What can you point to?
Sarah Palin took on the GOP and Dem establishments in Alaska and won. She is no shrinking violet.
Please. Give me a break. Sarah is a fighter and can take care of herself. I went to one of her rallies in NoVA during the 2008 election campaign. I have been around many politicians and Presidents, including Ronald Reagan, serving on WH advance teams and working with congressional delegations. IMO only Ronald Reagan could relate to a crowd better than Palin. You either have IT or you don't. She has IT. The Dems know that she has IT, which is why they are trying to destroy her. Have you ever attended a live event featuring Palin?
Don’t we now have a president with less than that?
And we are talking 2012 here. So this ‘tidal year’ just may be coming Sarah’s way. How tired do you think America will be of Barack Obama and his ilk by then?
Okay... define "professional" in this context.
Most Americans believe that CNN is qualified to objectively report the news!
According to CNN, that is.
In terms of actual experience before ascending to the presidency, almost certainly. But in terms of time in office, no. Bottom line: her resignation was flabbergasting and permanently damaging. They got her scalp. No, even worse. She gave them her scalp. Willingly.
If CNN is trying to downplay her, that makes me more interested in her, not less! They are only going to push the Republican they think they can most easily beat. No more McCains!
CNN pushing Mitt and the Huckster ‘cause they know neither can win an election. Very transparent of Chicken Noodle News.
Well, that claim is tricky. If your talking about a comparison predicated on amount of land area then indeed Alaska is certainly up there but based on population, Alaska is rather small. It ranks 47th among the 50 states, while Massachusetts and Arkansas rank 15th and 32th respectively.
She was also mayor before becoming governor, so I think she indeed does have more time in office than Barry. HOW long was he in the Senate? Like the blink of an eye.
I don’t agree. I think she did what she thought was right for her and her state. If that is the only drum her opponent is going to beat then they have very little to oppose her with. And considering her conservative beliefs in this time of rampant radicalism I don’t give a damn that she left office. Only that she was driven out by being nearly bankrupted by lawsuits and ethics complaints that went nowhere. She’ll get that message out if she runs.
” But most folks think that quitting when the going gets rough, is not a qualification for president.”
No, most liberals or sheeple who aren’t educated on the issue fall for that crock.
The rationale has been explained to you many times.
You can’t handle the truth because you are a MittBot.
Quite frankly, the US and its people don’t deserve Sarah Palin. Let it crash, and let the “people” find out what it really means to bow and scrape before their elites who suck them dry.
Does Sarah play golf? That's the ticket!
“...with seven in 10 saying the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee is not qualified.”
She’s been a successful governor for a few years, with amazing accomplishments to her credit, and has managed enormous budgets succesfully. Hussein had never even managed a hot dog stand. But she’s not qualified. Hmmmm...
The masses are asses. Something you “will of the people” populist fools (not you, Madam) should think about.
I am talking about major elective office, so I don’t count Obama in the state senate but I also don’t count Palin in the mayor’s office (if we were talking about a major city that would be different).
“I dont give a damn that she left office”
Millions will. I was shocked and disappointed. She had less than a year and a half left so she should’ve just finished her term.
“Only that she was driven out”
That IS her problem. Forget all the drama (true or imagined) that the media spun around her which WAS her problem before she resigned. As if she needed another challenge.
Of course. I had my tongue ever so slightly in my cheek.
My issues with Romney and Huckabee are of course ideological. And ideologically I'm much closer to her, although as I sometimes say she strikes me as just a bit more populist than I.
She's been a bit coy about some of her positions, but as time goes along she is articulating them more and more, and mostly they are in line with my own.
I'm not shy about admitting that she's not a heavyweight in terms of experience. But whereas Mitt is a real live executive, I don't trust him to hold fast. He's a dealmaker, he'll deal away things that matter in the interest of getting an agreement. Huck is soft on immigration, really soft.
There are heavier heavyweights out there, and I hope some of them run. Cheney's name is floating around now. For me, a Cheney-Palin ticket would be tremendous. She has shown herself to be a fighter, and an effective one. And he is the heaviest heavy-hitter around.
Of course, put her up against the O prior to his election, and there was no comparison. He had no resume at all, and was elected handily anyway.
So, do I think experience is necessary? Absolutely. But only if the experience demonstrates fealty to the constitution and to principle. That lets a lot of people out.
It hurt her, I don't think there is any doubt. I understand why she did it, but this is something that will haunt her for a while. Her enemies and especially her Repub rivals are going to keep throwing it at her until she has enough new history to make it irrelevant.
Her only way back, which may be what she is doing, is to go permanently on the attack.
If she does, and is able to claim some successes in getting a few people elected, it will let her (and her supporters) re-write the "narrative". Basically she already has started her story, that she left the governorship to be more effective blah blah. As one of her supporters, thats the story I repeat as often as anyone wants to hear it.
But now she has to make it true, and that means going on the attack and staying there (if she wants a future in politics, which she evidently does). She has to give her supporters some ammo, so she has to show some successes. She has been able to change the debate of the day several times lately, and she has the ability to drive her enemies bat-snot-crazy.
So she could pull it off. But she's got to keep herself in the spotlight, not make any fatal errors, and stay in Obama's face like Glenn Beck in heels.
