The change in constitution would bring the BNP in line with the recent Equality Bill. The Human Rights Commission has ruled that the BNP would become an illegal party if it does not allow people from ethnic minorities to join.
On the first day of the party's annual conference in Wigan, delegates debated whether its membership policy should discriminate on the grounds of race or religion.
The BNP leader Nick Griffin was present at the "closed for business" debate, at the Legends Bar in Hindley Green.
Members of the public and journalists are barred from the proceedings, which draw to a close on Sunday.
John Walker, a press officer for the party, said: "Today we debated the change and how we are going to move forward.
"More than 300 of the party's voting membership voted overwhelmingly in favour.
"At a later stage it will be put to the entire membership of the party to vote for, or against, the motion."
On Sunday, the delegates will discuss 12 policy motions put forward by the various regions the party operates in.
Mr Griffin will then close the conference with a keynote speech in the afternoon.

A recent poll taken showed that 22% would “seriously consider” voting for the BNP in the next general election. That is pretty significant considering that the British have a bunch of established parties that routinely get around that percentage in elections. It just goes to show you how far the intentional importation of millions of Muslims, and calling “racist” those who question it, has pushed the British people.
Parties like this give “conservatism” a VERY BAD name. These parties are nothing more than racist hate mongers and yet they wrap themselves in the flag of conservatism.
I am a conservative (small “c”) and I welcome ANYONE as my friend who shares my values. I have brown, blue, black, yellow, orange (fake tan), green, pink friends.. and I would gladly add all the missing colors..
The goal of us conservatives is basic conservative values of live and let live and dont tread on me.
I do NOT hate anyone. Hate is corrosive and has zero place in my life.

I am sorry but BNP IS racist.
I truly sympathize with the Brits and how their country has been screwed over by the Islamist terrorists.
However, if you have ever lived in the UK, you will remember the horrific attacks a lot of BNP sympathizers have done on innocent people.
Hate is hate. No question about it. The Brits need to take control of their country but putting every brown person in an incinerator is not the way to do it and neither is deporting every brown person who may have lived there for 1 generations.
Keep this in mind guys, if you all support the proposition of ethnic cleansing then the Native Americans in ALL of the Americas and Australia and New Zealand should kick us all out as we are by definition “immigrants” to these great lands.

The BNP actually is racist, hence the white’s-only rule that the article mentions. Of course, when the main parties insist on ignoring a growing problem fringe parties like this are bound to pick up support from an exasperated segment of society.

I wasn’t saying whether the BNP was racist or not. I was pointing out that up until literally almost a month ago, in Britain, if you dared utter a slightly negative word about immigration (particularly Muslim) you would be shouted down, called a racist, and personally destroyed. In this type of climate, it is no wonder people reject the mainstream parties that not only ignored this problem, but actively promoted it, and turn to those who offer a clear alternative.
The original BNP emerged during World War II when a handful of former members of the British Union of Fascists took on the name. They reject a free capitalist system.
They may be right on a few things, but they are wrong on everything else.

I personally think the BNP are a bunch of unpleasant neo-nazi Statists - basically socialists, just of a slightly different flavour.
However, I don’t see how forcing them to accept members they don’t want can possibly be legal. What happened to the right of freedom of association? Equality law surely cannot trump that?
I haven’t heard of Hindu support but it wouldn’t surprise me. Jewish support must surely be a case of “my enemies enemy is my friend”. The BNP were notoriously anti-semitic just a few years back.
No of course not. Only a party with a “whites-only” policy can be racist. One with a “blacks-only” policy is merely “expressing” racial solidarity, and representing a poor, downtrodden minority.
For a policitally active person, you must really try and keep up with developments. I suggest a refresher course in “Nuspeak”.
Don't be ridiculous -- the UK is still over 92% white, that's far whiter than America which is 74% white.
