Sound of Silence During Obama Veterans Day Speech at Arlington Cemetery

Barack Obama's speech commemorating Veterans Day at Arlinton Cemetery this morning was received with stony silence by those in attendance.

What should have been applause lines for Obama about caring for our veterans drew no cheers, no clapping and no 'hooahs'.

There was no Prince-concert-squealing for Obama like there was yesterday at the Fort Hood memorial service. In fact there was no cheering at all for the commander-in-chief in a time of war. Just polite, subdued applause when Obama was introduced and when he conluded his speech.

In contrast, a randomly selected Veterans Day speech by President George W. Bush shows numerous interruptions for applause.

A transcript of Bush's 2004 speech includes notations of eight interruptions for applause before the final notation of applause at the conclusion of his speech.

Can this link be posted with this article? This shows the complete *lack* of response from the audience. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Re the hideous ‘black and blue’ outfit today — it’s like a bunch of separates thrown together and tied up with the steel belted radial! Yecchhh!!!!!!!!

And black tights and patent leather boots? With that dress and coat? Come ON!!!!! What a total mess.

That belt she’s wearing has got to be some kind of symbolism to someone or something. There is no other logical reason for wearing it at totally unappropriate times and places, with apparently no regard to the garments she’s wearing. Who wears a belt that is not part of a coat over the top of one?

Here's a copy of a post by Marie over on the 2383602 thread. (Marie, hope you don't mind my re-posting it here. The more people who know about this, the better.)

Yes, they do.

I have a friend who was in attendance at the Memorial on Ft Hood this afternoon. As many of you know, there was a bit of whooping and hollering when Obama took the stage to speak. According to my friend, it wasn’t the soldiers yelling.

Several civilians were there to hear Obama. And they weren’t there to pay their respects to our fallen.

Five women were wearing white t-shirts, with one letter on each shirt... O-B-A-M-A. Others were dressed in attire more fitting for a night club than a memorial service. Almost all were women. When Obama took the stage the “rock star” cheer went up from them.

But the worst part, the part you didn’t see on the cameras, was the hundreds of people (including a few soldiers) who simply walked out as soon as Obama was done speaking. They got what they came for. They were done.

If this is what the typical Obama supporter is like, I don’t want a damn thing to do with them.

Classless. Clueless. Crass. Rude. Hurtful.

Sincere thanks to your friend for giving you that report, and to you for posting it.

I am very glad to hear that. My brother is in Iraq-again-but can’t really say much from wherever he is. My cynicism gets the best of me these days.

My husband was there last year. After the election results came out the reaction among the ranks was largely disgust but they were told “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”.

Many of our friends initially talked about getting out so they wouldn’t have to serve under this travesty, but realized the USA is more important than this mistake by the voters.

Hopefully it will be a short-lived mistake.

Hi kristinn,

IMO, the reason is that the Obama Administration caught a lot of much deserved grief for planting loud, boisterous people in the crowd as was the case during the Fort Hood Memorial.

Can you imagine cheering and adoring fans screaming in a solemn venue honoring 13 dead American soldiers?

They sure as hell made sure it didn’t happen in Arlington Cemetery.

I did not watch it. Did she have on the bondage belt?
From what I am reading, there was a silence that was deafening.

He cannot call them extremists
He can not group them with the ‘teabaggers’
He cannot associate them with a backlash against Muslims.
He cannot say those are the vets at risk of joining domestic terrorist groups.

Through their silence they said:
We heard the shout-out before you mentioned the carnage at Foot Hood.
We hear you say not to jump to conclusions when every fact revealed contrads the lies meant to bury the true motive.
We see your refusal to call it like it is: A terrorist act committed by a Muslim against our brothers and sister.
We hear the talking points put out regarding the so called gunman, speaking of his victimization.
We hear you minimize the very real nightmares we have dealt with by saying this terrorist suffered the same even though he has never been near a combat line.
We suffer every time one of our troops is killed in Afghanistan because you cannot make a decision.
We put our lives on the line to protect freedom bought with the blood of our fellow soldiers.

A silence heard across the land.

I do not mean to put words in the mouths of our Veterans. It is just the interpretation of an American than respects and honors our vets, FWIW

Because I am old, I have some memories of past presidents and my overall feelings about them (my apologies to females reading this....I know it must be somewhat embarrasing to read about a male's "feelings"!!).

Kennedy: first - elation, then crushing sadness

Johnson: hate (he sent my butt to SEA)

Nixon: intense dislike - just knew he was a liar.

Ford: more hate...only reason he got the job was the deal he struck with Nixon.

Carter: first awe-struck (how in the hell did someone so completley inept become president?), then sickened.

Reagan: intense pride both in him and my country - for the entire eight years

G.H.W. Bush: hopeful, then disappointed

Clinton: a mixture of hatred and physical illness for the entire eight years.

G.W.Bush: first, pride...then immense disappointment

obammer: for the first time in my entire life...complete, total, all consuming embarrasment for my country coupled with intense, reasoned hatred for the individual and everything "he" stands for.

It’s bad enough to have a CINC who doesn’t respect the troops, but these are the kinds of ignorant, disrespectful, selfish, clueless, crass—I can’t even find the words—voters who put him there. They probably don’t have a clue about policies or the good of the country, Hussein is just their latest American Idol.

You forget the media: THEY are the ones responsible for Obama’s “success”, for his election, for his agenda.

THEY are the ones who ignore problems. cheer (lack of) successes, lie about the future, lie about his lies, lie about republican success, lie about republican failures, lie about programs, .....
