After the first day of recounting votes from Election Day, Nassau County Executive GOP candidate Ed Mangano leads incumbent Tom Suozzi by 24 votes.
The number is small but could paint a troubling scenario for Suozzi, who is seeking a third term in office.
According to sources the votes counted were from the 14th Legislative District, where Democratic Legislator Dave Mejias is also hoping the recount puts him on top of his challenger Republican Joe Belesi, Long Beach and most of Suozzis hometown of Glen Cove.
More than 1,000 voting machines were taken to the Nassau County Board of Elections (BOE) for re-canvassing after the election. The machines are opened up and the votes are recounted. At night, the machines are secured and the two keys that can open the rooms doors are given to the Nassau County Police Department.
Once the machines are examined, absentee ballots will be counted. GOP sources said that with Suozzi being behind even 24 votes after his hometown Glen Cove was recounted could foretell a Republican victory. The absentee ballots are expected to tilt towards the GOP.

I would advise a Conservative microscope to clean out the RATs hiding in offices plotting to sabotage their departments. GW failed miserably in this and it cost him and gave us a dictator.
Anyone who told you Tuesdays elections were not a repudiation of the radical social-democrat agenda is lying out there behinds.
2010 is setting itself up to be an absolute massacre of libera republicans and democrats from all but the bluest of blue districts.
So true.
It can’t happen soon enough.
see if frigging conservatives and reps in NY would get off their asses and not just say ny is a dem state we will win
ACORN must be slipping.
Nassau County, by the way, has a population of 1.5 million, and is larger than 11 states.
It’s also one of the wealthiest counties in the country. It’s upper-class, educated demographics are emblematic of the kind of voters that have left the GOP over the last 10 years ago. Reversing this trend is key to a GOP resurgance - a victory in Nassau County would go a long way to that end.
A conservative already won the county executive job in Westchester County.
It’s now up to 39 and that’s just machines! We have a 500 lead in the paper votes!
Grew up there. Wasn’t Suozzi supposed to be the 2nd coming?
when is the last time a republican won a recound like this?
Don’t know, but the GOP winning in Nassau and Westchester County in the NYC Metro area is a big development.
I’m afraid to get my hopes up but saying a prayer !
This is very hopeful.
Given that the article does not say that Mangano has *gained votes* on Suozzi in the recounted precincts, I don’t think that this tells us much of anything. If Mangano led by 24 votes in those precincts as counted on Election Day (which I don’t know to be the case), and he still leads by 24 votes after the recount, then, ceteris paribus, Suozzi will win the remaining precincts by enough votes to give him the lead that he had on election night. Basically, we need to be able to determine net votes gained and lost for each candidate before we can say for certain how promising the recount is.

other things being equal.
The dictionary is my friend. ;)
Fingers crossed for this race.
I just read that Mangano has actually gained a lot of votes in the recount—150 of them due to votes from a particular ballot line not having been counted for him in certain precincts—and is sitting on a 400+ lead with the recount almost complete. I don’t want to jinx it, but it looks promising.
Yes, I blame you personally for jinxing Hoffman with that Red Auerbach talk. ;-) ;-p
