When Joseph Cao was elected to the 2nd Congressional District in Louisiana, House Minority Leader John Boehner hailed him as representing the GOPs future.
Cao was the only Republican to vote for the Pelosi healthcare reform bill Saturday evening.
According to the POLITICO, in a memo dated December 7, 2008 and addressed to House Republicans, Boehner wrote:
As House Republicans look ahead to the next two years, the Cao victory is a symbol of what can be achieved when we think big, present a positive alternative, and work aggressively to earn the trust of the American people. Joseph Cao is a Vietnamese immigrant whose experience in America drew him to the Republican Party and its traditional commitment to freedom and reform. Working with like-minded Republicans such as Governor Bobby Jindal, he took an aggressive stand against corruption, offering a principled alternative to what voters were offered by the local Democratic establishment. Shrugging off conventional wisdom, he ran as a reformer in a district hungry for new representation in Congress. And he won
The Cao victory is a symbol of our future. In the two years ahead, House Republicans will demonstrate our commitment to reform by holding ourselves to the highest possible ethical standard - and, with new faces like Joseph Cao and John Fleming and the rest of the incoming GOP freshman class in our ranks, by presenting principled, superior solutions to the challenges facing our country.
Republican Congressman Anh Joseph Cao: a symbol of the GOPs future.

Boehner = Steele = needs to go
Boner’s own squishiness disqualifies him as a leader- he talks the talk, but then has to trot along smartly to keep up with the base so he can lead them
I think my head is going to explode.
When the Republicans opposed the Health Care Bill; I thought - wow, Republicans that are for smaller goverment, this is good.
Then these half-wits (no offence to those with an IQ below 80) produce a Health Care Bill of their own. Isn’t there a single person in the party who has the backbone to stand up and say “um, hey guys? Do you realize we are supposed to represent SMALLER goverment, and producing our own Health Care Bill is not only against the most fundamental principles of our party - it’s contrary to the demands from our constituents?”
Are lobotomies required to live in Washington? Or are they just the latest fads from these mental midgets? I’ve known 6 years olds with a better attention span, and while young; know the difference between right and wrong. I would expect our Congressmen to be at least mentally equivalent to these 6 year old.
While I agree with you on Dede, I do think that in fairness, Boehner had no way of knowing in December of last year how Cao would vote on a bill in November of this year. And the fact that a Republican won Jefferson’s district, especially on a sour election night, had to be one of the few highlights for Republicans in office.
Don’t get me wrong; I think he’s part of the problem, but then, who in office isn’t part of the problem? (Michele Bachmann excluded of course.)
I disagree. Everyone makes mistakes—and just because Cao is a turncoat doesn’t mean Boehner (because of that decision) should be made anathema.
Look: Ronald Reagan appointed two of the biggest WEASELS in Supreme Court history: Sandra Day O’Connor and Anthony Kennedy. Those two have done more damage to our Republic by their equivocating constiutional principles than Cao or Dede did with their stupid myopic votes.
Yet, even with those faults, Reagan was a great president.
Now I’m not saying Boehner is Reagan. I’m establishing a principle that says you cannot rip a guy for a bad call like Cao or Dede...those people are to blame. Boehner may or may not be a good leader. Frankly, I’ve checked his youtube stuff and his twitters and he seems to be a pretty staunch conservative.
FReepers criticize Pelosi for being too dictatorial and Boehner for not being dictatorial enough.
Call me a contrarian but I’m impressed the Boehner has consitently been able to corral the many, many RINOS in the house and keep them from voting in support of dem initives. The result has been that the pressure is put squarely on the dems to herd their own party and has significantly slowed down their march to communism. He may not be the man for the speakers job if they ever got there (like Trent Lott was a goof minority leader but an awful majority leader) but so far I think he’s done okay.
“Let me grasp this. FReepers criticize Pelosi for being too dictatorial and Boehner for not being dictatorial enough.”
Yes. Then praise Lieberman for “courage in crossing the aisle” and condemn McCain for being a “Maverick”.
Then condemn Bush for being RINO and praise Reagan who gave us O’Conner and signed the first amnesty bill into law.
Then praise dems who switch to the GOP and condemn Scozza as a “traitor”.
Etc., etc.
Then they have the gall to talk about “principles”. Some FReepers wouldn’t know a principle if it hit them on the nose. These people want want they want and they want it now. They don’t really know why, it just feels good...today.
Sorry, Cao was all we could do in that district, which nearly elected an indicted democrat.
He won’t likely win again, and we shouldn’t send him money, but there are some districts that are so democrat that we need a liberal republican if we want someone who would support the republican party for leadership.
Remember, with the EXACT same people in the house, if the republicans were in leadership, there would be no health care bill. Leadership is important.
DeDe was a mistake because there was no need to nominate a liberal for that seat, as a conservative would win easily enough.
