U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.
It is not known whether the intelligence agencies informed the Army that one of its officers was seeking to connect with suspected al Qaeda figures, the officials said.
One senior lawmaker said the CIA had, so far, refused to brief the intelligence committees on what, if any, knowledge they had about Hasan's efforts.
CIA director Leon Panetta and the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, have been asked by Congress "to preserve" all documents and intelligence files that relate to Hasan, according to the lawmaker.
On Sunday, Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) called for an investigation into whether the Army missed signs as to whether Hasan was an Islamic extremist.
"If Hasan was showing signs, saying to people that he had become an Islamist extremist, the U.S. Army has to have a zero tolerance," Lieberman told Fox News Sunday.

"I'm not gonna be able to take it! I'm not gonna be able to take it any more!!"
The tort bar is also a root cause of the health care debacle. Once they established a ''right'' to health care, free riders overloaded the system.
Army Chief Concerned for Muslim Troops
...NYT headline.
he was after all not a bad guy .. he was an adviser on obama’s transition team ...
We need names of the people who ignored this. People need to lose their careers and pensions over this.
Apparently Army Chief of Staff Casey is concerned that non-muslim troops might harm his pet muzzies.
Not the Omar Sharif of late...
Nothing to see here as the elites have already determined (actually, their minds were already made up seconds after the murders happened)that his actions had nothing to do with terrorism or his religious beliefs.
This is going to get ugly, quick.
Individuals are going to start throwing each other under the bus before the scapegoat is picked out from among the Army brass and “intelligence” agencies.
This is going to be an historic investigation that exposes just how warped our institutions have become by political correctness, and how utterly preventable this slaughter was.
Thirteen needlessly extinguished lives.

... and apparently did nothing. ???? [wasn't politically correct, and besides since he was a muzzie, it would be profiling.]
If Obama were as clever as Lincoln or Roosevelt (as were are constantly told he is), he would have an Alan Pinkerton or J. Edgar Hoover rooting out these enemies within our walls.
“But it’s not terrorism, it’s just a poor Army doctor who snapped under stress.”
Actually, he`s the victim, not the troops or their families. Don`t believe me? Just ask a liberal.
Must disagree with you here.
Politically Correct speech is a tool of the left which has been *enforced* with lawsuits by the ACLU, etc. The left believes that if you control the language then you control the people.
We need to kill Politically Correct speech and we need to combat the rulings it has engendered by fighting those rulings in the courts.
We need more and braver conservative lawyers and we need to individually react strongly and convincingly to counteract PC speech. It is killing this country which is what it was designed to do.
Excellent insight.
I think it’s time to get a passport, America’s demise is coming so quickly and much faster than I thought.
YES! And, how about Purple Heart medals for the victims of this attack?
It’s time we shunned these “journalists” who offer baseless, unsupported theories as “reasons” why something happened. They should be looking for work with the other 15% of the working public.
