Babies' Language Learning Starts From The Womb

cienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2009) — From their very first days, newborns' cries already bear the mark of the language their parents speak, reveals a new study published online in Current Biology. The findings suggest that infants begin picking up elements of what will be their first language in the womb, and certainly long before their first babble or coo.

"The dramatic finding of this study is that not only are human neonates capable of producing different cry melodies, but they prefer to produce those melody patterns that are typical for the ambient language they have heard during their fetal life, within the last trimester of gestation," said Kathleen Wermke of the University of Würzburg in Germany. "Contrary to orthodox interpretations, these data support the importance of human infants' crying for seeding language development."

How can this be? Embryos and fetuses are just 'blobs of tissue', right? (total sarcasm).

Similar evidence has been known for probably at least two decades. Earlier research showed that French newborns respond to French language, and Russian newborns respond most to the sound of Russian. Apparently before birth they were already picking up the distinctive rhythms of their parents’ speech.

Why did they make that neonate look like an alien.

I’ve handled many premi’s and they have thick short necks not spindly skinny ones.

I don’t think that is a neonate, it looks more like a 14 or 16 week fetus.

It is still a very fanciful artist’s representation.

Baby never has a period with a long skinny neck.
