An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, authorities said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States.
The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive in a hospital under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He was shot four times, and was on a ventilator and unconscious, according to military officials. "I would say his death is not imminent," Cone said.
The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia.
President Barack Obama called the shooting at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, "a horrific outburst of violence."
"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas," the commander in chief said. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."
Soldiers rushed to treat their injured colleagues by ripping their uniforms into makeshift bandages. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that some casualties may have been victims of "friendly fire," shot by authorities amid the mayhem and confusion at the scene, said a senior U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters that were under investigation.
Hasan had transferred to Fort Hood in July from Walter Reed Medical Center, where he received a poor performance evaluation, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

More from the ROP.
Military installations are largely gun free zones.
I’m not surprised if the personnel are so unstable.
“Im not surprised if the personnel are so unstable.”
Consider, this guy is a psychiatrist (their type has always left me uneasy as I think they’re unstable by nature), and he’s a Muslim in the US military who is bucking to get out of the service (after they paid for his education), and he’s about ready to deploy to Islamaville which even a true believer realizes is a very bad place to go.
Does anyone expect a different result? Certainly not you or I.
This probably won’t make the national news, but last evening as reports were coming into the Dallas TV stations, one of the news readers mentioned that the good Major was Muslim, and that he had been posting disturbing items on the Internet about a suicide bombing. He was talking about blowing himself up and taking out others.
I have to catch up on this story but HE WAS A SLEEPR CELL!
He was a moderate Muslim. Then he suddenly got religion.
And why has noone called this what it is? The T word? The big T? Maybe even the M word?
This was a terrorist attack, carried out by a Moslem TERRORIST!
Fah! An Muslim fanatic opens fire, and you say the personnel are unstable?
The murder rate for the military is lower than in our general population... Better stay home and lock your doors.
He was unstable alright, but never saw a day of combat.
Another moderate peacful Mohammedan kills infidels.
The Mosque in Virginia in needs an FBI - CIA probe.
I would think four bullets would have “ventilated” this ass hole enough. Let the prick suffocate.
If hes the psychiatrist, what must the people he’s been treating be like?
The chaplain was asked to brief his slides to the commanding general as part of a weekly update to the fort. The chaplain talked about this Muslim holiday here, and that Muslim holiday there.
The entire slide was about upcoming Muslim events. And no, the chaplain was not a Muslim chaplain, but apparently a PC dressed down clown who had zero conviction for his supposed Christian faith. I know this because I saw him lead a "prayer" earlier that was so secular and watered down, it could have been given by a Wiccan motivational speaker.
I would think that is exactly the reason. And if you think about it, as an argument it does have its merits. Aggression (admittedly controlled aggression) is a key attribute of a good soldier. Now, they get stressed, they get pumped, the army psychiatrist who is supposed to monitor them is a secret Jihadist and anyway is too busy trying to get out of his obligations - there is a real possibility of mayhem. I think there was an incident in Iraq early on when a soldier murdered a couple of his colleagues - I believe a woman was involved in that. And as you say, any officer who is on watch when that happens is going to get blamed, no matter how little he could do about it, so the safest course of action is to simply take away the soldiers main method of causing lethal harm. Unfortunately, this is a war that is becoming all encompassing. Its not just taking place in some far off place. It is here, and now.
