The Republicans Underestimate Their Strength
American Spectator ^ | 11/4/2009 | Peter Ferrara

Posted on 11/04/2009 5:35:39 AM PST by markomalley

In last year's campaign, the one true thing Obama said to his critics was, "The political ground is changing under your feet." But what is not sufficiently recognized is that is going on again, right now, in the opposite direction.

That is what yesterday's elections showed. And what yesterday's political earthquake revealed about the landscape is that the biggest miscalculation going on right now is that the Republicans underestimate their own strength. As a result, they may fail to take maximum advantage of the political tsunami that is coming in 2010, just building to what is to come in 2012. For conservatives, this is a time of greater opportunity than 1977.

The author is confusing Republican and conservative.

This was evident in NY, Dede S was NOT a conservative, most likely not even a Republican.

Yes, but grass roots Republican voters must now beware of rotten eggs in their midst. NY-23 proved beyond any doubt that their are traitors who call themselves Republicans.

They must be thrown out! Employ the Scozzafava smell test to identify and eliminate the rotten eggs. America is on the verge of a return to greatness. But we cannot let the Sozzafava Repblicans (including people like Newt Gingrich) ruin it.

“Yes, but grass roots Republican voters must now beware of rotten eggs in their midst...”

starting with Michael Steele...and Newty...

We need to make Tom Delay the chairman of the RNC...and just watch what unfolds...

When Dede endorsed the Democrat she left no room for doubt of who she was. NOT a conservative. A true Republican NOT.

What these elections show is that liberalism itself has been repudiated, perhaps even more than the personalities involved.

Liberalism sounds so good in theory, but has been shown time and time again that, when put into practice, things go awry.

Corzine's defeat is a recognition on the part of the electorate that liberal governance brings all the unintended consequences that conservatives warned about.

Deval Patrick is doing the same thing for liberalism (and conservatism) in Massachusetts. Only when liberalism is put into practice is it revealed as a bankrupt ideology, and thus we have yesterday's election results.

"The author is confusing Republican and conservative."

The Rep/Dem big government coalition wins again.

Yep..it went exactly as planned...the "r" dropped out too late to be taken off the ticket (intentional) 45% of the electorate voted Conservative. 6% voted Republican. That 6% is what gave us the Dem.

People who didn't want the Dem but did not pay attention to the news of her dropping out is what elected the dem....

The "GOP" can not be happy but the controlling Dem/Rep totalitarian oligarchy at the top is. Another loss for the people against a run away government.

The story behind the NY-23 results probably had nothing to do with political philosophy or party affiliation.

I'm convinced that a substantial number of the votes cast for the Democratic candidate came from fat, ugly, middle-aged women who were just pissed off that "their woman" was forced out of the race in favor of a white guy.

"I'm convinced that a substantial number of the votes cast for the Democratic candidate came from fat, ugly, middle-aged women.."

From what I gather something like 70% of white women voted Conservative. I watched the “r” get thousands of votes...just enough to give it to the Dem. It went exactly as planned by the liberal "r's". She should have been off the ticket. If the Rep/Dem oligarcy big government coalition thinks they can try this again...they are mistaken.

The message last night was that “Spend and Tax” is not the perscription for the US Economy.

The DemocRATs mantra used to be “Tax and Spend”. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid ushered in “Spend and Tax” last January, and it’s not going to be tolerated in 2010 elections. If the Democraps pass Health Care early next year, I expect Hoffman to clean Owens clock in the 2010 election, and a massive shift in composition of Congress. The Blue Dogs and the RINOs better get the message - their days are numbered if Congress continues down the “Spend and Tax” path.

The RNC needs to re-focus right now. NY-23 shows they need to vet candidates on basic conservative principles and stop supporting RINOs, Liberals, and Socialists.

Last night was a great night for Conservatives (not Republicans and certainly not Democraps). It’s “Morning in America” all over again, and the quicker the RNC gets that message the better.

Oh, I bet the rats are not happy. You are confusing Scuzziface and Hoffman. Hoffman was the THIRD party candidate. Scuzziface was the so called republican candidate. She was going to lose, regardless if Hoffman entered the race or not. Hoffman, and the conservative party, almost won, and if all the ballots were counted(which they won't be now)he probably only lost by about a point.

This is a win for conservatives, we ran the frickin' RINO out of the race, too late to help much, but still we almost won. Owens will only be in office until 2010, we will vote him out then.

The absolutely biggest race, and the one that has scared the sh** out of the dimwits today, is the NJ race, a race that even a huge number FReepers said was bound to go to Corzine but didn't. That is the race that scares the crap out of them, that one and VA's 20 point win by a Republican.

Instead of crying in our beer about NY23, which is a positive after all, we need to be screaming about NJ and VA and all the other republican races that were won last night.

The rats had it in the bag from the start...more than half the republicans are big government rats.

This election was a big win for Conservatives...the rep/dem coalition had to play tricks to win, just like with the national election.

Side note...I don't buy that we have two parties any longer.....just like tv wrestling, it's like fake dude,,,they all share a common goal and split the winnings.

Rinos do not want a return of the majority for the GOP. That puts them in the back seat and out of leadership power. They like being the leaders of the Rino pup tent in agreement with their friends across the aisle. They are not underestimating anything. They are doing what they want to do - keep conservatives out of the GOP so that they are in charge.

Actually, it was more then just 2 out of 3. The GOP seems to have done quite well all over the Northeast, where it was thought to be dead.

Many of them were local wins which will lay the groundwork for future growth.
