America has changed, and you have helped. Although we did not succeed in winning this election, we have succeeded in making sure political parties and special interests no longer take the people for granted. I believe we have sent a powerful message and laid the groundwork for future conservative campaigns.
I congratulate Bill Owens on a hard won victory. In our tradition of free elections, our country continues. And although Bill Owens has won, I believe America is turning the page to a new dawn.
The ideas of freedom, sound fiscal management and citizen government have sprung back into our consciousness. Our founding fathers would be proud of New York 23. It was here that our principles, those that have been the foundation of our nation, came back to life with a vengeance. And it was here that the people rose up against the political bosses who tried to impose their will. It was here that people reached out to control their own destinies again.
Despite the election results, I am optimistic for our future, because now I know that I am not alone in wanting to repair our great nation. Throughout this campaign I have been inspired by the outpouring of support and the intensity of that support.
Ive met many different people in this campaign, from many walks of life and many professions; each with a different personal story to share. Yet we are all united in the belief that by participating in democracy, we could inspire change.
I urge that no one feel defeated, for this was only one of many elections. We came close, we put our agenda in front of the nation and the nation took notice. The worse thing we could do now, is not continue forward. Next year there are other elections and other candidates who have drawn inspiration from our efforts.
I would like to thank all of you who placed your faith in me, who worked tirelessly and shared your enthusiasm with those around you. You are all patriots, you have all stood up for your country and I am honored to stand among you.
Thank you,
What I’ve learned is that RINO’s endorse Democrats and so there’s no reason whatsoever to vote for them.
She was acceptable to that RINO district. Tonight we shockingly learned that far right conservative Hoffman was not acceptable to liberal NY. So unacceptable that 6% of GOP voters...when given a choice between a vote for a liberal rat, or a conservative spoiler...chose to throw their votr away
Dede was only unacceptable to Rush, Palin, and lots of other out of state conservatives.
Newly reelected Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) credited Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with firing up his base and allowing him to cruise to a victory over Democrat Jim Martin.
Sarah Palin came in on the last day, did a fly-around and, man, she was dynamite, Chambliss told Fox News on Wednesday. We packed the houses everywhere we went. And it really did allow us to peak and get our base fired up.
Chambliss beat Martin by three points on Nov. 4 but did not reach 50 percent of the vote, making a runoff necessary. However, the incumbent easily beat his challenger Tuesday, more than quadrupling his margin of victory, and in the process kept Democrats from reaching a filibuster-proof Senate majority.
Chambliss heaped praise on Palin, saying she has a great future in the GOP.
I cant overstate the impact she had down here. All these folks did a great job coming in, he said, referring to former presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani. They allow you [to] add momentum to where we were in the campaign. But when she walks in a room, folks just explode.
This was a big day for us.
It’s hard to fight entropy, but we’re doing it.
The entropic Left is going down.
My question escaped you:
for what purpose?
Maybe the Dem will be more conservative than Dede.
There’s no getting around the fact—people are just sick and tired of RINO’s in the GOP.
What? Hoffman got 45% and Scazzofava got 6%, and you say that Hoffman was the spoiler?
Either you forgot the /sarc tag, or you’re loony.
She drew 6% WITHOUT running. She dropped out last week.
She was not acceptable - otherwise there would not have been a conservative challenge. She was already losing to Owens before Palin endorsed Hoffman. Also Hoffman was already getting significant support (more than 20% I believe) before Palin endorsed him. So, that should put to bed any idea that Scozzafava was acceptable to this district. Once again this should have been settled by a primary election which would have allowed the GOP to unify around an acceptable candidate. What caused this problem was that the candidate was picked by party bosses in a smoke filled room.
No. I would have been happy if Hoffman won. You wanted Owens in that seat.
Dream the dream.
and the NY voter.
She dropped out on a Saturday night for an election on a following Tuesday morning. And told Republicans to vote for a Democrat to boot. Splitter. Quitter. Not a team player.
Well said—as all of your other posts have been here tonight too.
She drew 6% because her campaign imploded and came off at the rails, she was nothing but a 6 percenter, she tried, she had all the money, but she couldn’t gain any traction.
And a great many of those votes were early votes, cast before she dropped out on Saturday.
I’m not sure what to think about today. I agree with you that declaring what happened in NY-23 as an unqualified victory for conservatives is either spin or self-delusion, neither of which is helpful. As good as beating Scozzafava was, today is not a good day for conservatives. Overall, this whole episode was probably a wash - an empty victory. You don’t run in elections to come in second. It’s as simple as that.
On the other hand, I think the Republican wins in Virginia and New Jersey are huge, and the speed with which the Obama camp is trying to downplay it speaks volumes. This is a big shot across Obama’s bow, and will probably have some serious repercussions in Washington. Also, at least as far as the voting public is concerned, this news overshadows the NY-23 election.
In the end, I’d say today was a loss for Obama, but not a win for conservatives. A win for Hoffman would have put conservatives in a very strong position. His loss means the fight for the soul of the GOP is alive and well, and certainly won’t be resolved before the 2010 elections. This could get ugly.
No you are a liberal that clearly wanted the worst candidate most of us have ever seen to win, the candidate that the daily kos endorsed over the democrat.
You support and are still supporting the candidate that sabotaged the race so that a democrat could squeeze out a narrow win.
Then let NY have its wonderful liberals. You should be happier.
