ROME The Vatican has denounced a ruling by the European court of human rights that said the display of crucifixes in Italian public schools violates religious and educational freedoms.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi says the crucifix is a "fundamental sign of the importance of religious values" in Italian history and culture.
He says the European court had no right intervening in such a profoundly Italian matter ..
.. In Strasbourg, France, on Tuesday ordered Italy to pay a euro5,000 ($7,390) fine to a mother who wanted crucifixes removed from her children's classrooms.
The Italian government said it would appeal.

Italy in uproar over court ruling against crucifix
Gilbert Reilhac and Philip Pullella
STRASBOURG/ROME (Reuters) The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that Italian schools should remove crucifixes from classrooms, sparking uproar in Italy, where such icons are embedded in the national psyche.
"This is an abhorrent ruling," said Rocco Buttiglione, a former culture minister who helped write papal encyclicals.
"It must be rejected with firmness. Italy has its culture, its traditions and its history. Those who come among us must understand and accept this culture and this history," he said.
The court ruling, which Italy said it would appeal, said crucifixes on school walls, a common sight that is part of every Italian's life, could disturb children who were not Christians.

May as well take them down because many people will be looking for a payday out of this now.
Personally I look at anything “public” as public toilet.
And I would never display crucifixes in such places.
My ruling would be like this: Crucifixes are forbidden to be displayed in public restrooms as well as all other public rooms.
The EU has a separation of church and state provision? What do they say to the coming Islamic theocracy and Sharia courts?
Place them in the classroom but put a black cloth over them, to hide them. Then tell the students that Jesus is forbidden to them.
That will make them more interested than ever...
That’s for sure.
These days you have to be normal to be a Rebel.
Perhaps the Vatican might wish to reconsider putting its faith in secular statist organizations.
Tail wagging the dog.
“European court of human rights “
That phrase alone is frightening
Sounds like Italy has a solution at hand ~ simply dispose of all the non-Christians. Then blame it on the EU ruling.
Tell the EU ‘court’ to go pound sand. Better yet, tell ‘em to send troops to enforce their little ruling.
Ping for later
Tell the EU court to go pound sand. Better yet, tell em to send troops to enforce their little ruling.
world’s gone mad. 1 mother turns around an entire culture. Minority rules in Italy and Europe and especially in America.
